Entune System Freezing, Crashing, and/or Rebooting?

I’ve received two recent reports of problems with the Entune infotainment system in the new Toyota Highlander. In one case, it seems to freeze, at least temporarily, on startup. In the other case, it completely crashes (freeze and/or reboot) when the owner’s iPod is plugged in.

Regarding the freezing problem, Richard wrote:

“The multimedia system in my 2015 Highlander XLE often freezes when first starting out. I will start the Highlander and give a series of instructions and nothing happens — e.g., navigation, audio, phone instructions. A few minutes down the road, the computer wakes up and starts executing the commands in the order I entered them.

I called the dealer and was told that they were unaware of similar issues. And they cannot fix a computer that will be working by the time I get there. I have spent 30 years in the computer field, and I know a problem when I see one. When you add up the screen glare problem, the instability of Entune app, and problems like I have experienced, the electronics fall short in the value area.”

As for the crashing, Gordon wrote:

“I’ve had a major problem with the audio head unit crashing (freeze and/or complete reboot while driving) when my iPod classic is plugged in. I don’t have to be using it, just have it connected. If you notice a freeze (in the navigation map) and are quick about disconnecting the iPod, the system can recover without a crash.

This happens every day, often several times a day. This an iPod Classic with a 160GB drive in a 2014 Highlander Limited. Is anyone else seeing this? Besides this crashing problem between the iPod and the navigation system, everything else is great.

Oh, except that I have the wrinkles in the leather, too.”

While I haven’t had any major problems with the infotainment system in our 2014 XLE (other than some general unhappiness with certain design and performance details), it seems clear that others are experiencing technical difficulties. I should note that I’ve also seen reports of aberrant behavior elsewhere online — i.e., crashes, rebooting, etc.

Update: Okay, now I’ve started having occasional problems with Entune freezing and/or crashing, too… Ugh.

Interesting. I don’t have crashing/freezing problems. Wonder if we can look at our version of software somewhere. I purchased my car 2 weeks ago (it was fresh in from the docks). If helpful, I would happily check my software version if someone told me how.

Just wondering….why does anyone need to use the Entune app? Is it for Pandora? Since I use a USB stick for my audio, maybe that’s why I don’t ever seem to launch Entune.

    • Michael Nov 6, 2014

Susan: The Entune app on the phone is for connecting to the head unit where you can use the Pandora, iHeart Radio, etc. apps. The phone app basically provides internet connectivity to the audio system. But…

There’s really no need for this. Instead, you can just connect via USB or Bluetooth (I do the latter) and run Pandora or whatever directly from your phone with the sound being played via the audio system.

In short, the Entune system is just an extra (and unnecessary) layer that gets between your phone and the sound coming out of your vehicle’s speakers.

I have a ’14 Tundra with Entune/Nav. Lately i have had issues with nav crashing/rebooting while driving, iphone6 is connected via blutooth but not actively used. Ive also lost the ability to return txt messages with any of the 15 pre-programmed responses.

I have had a problem with the 2014 Highlander navigation system freezing and shutting down. I was told if you are connected to Messaging and have messages with icons like smiley faces, this will crash the system. Toyota is aware of the problem. I was also told that they only come out with updates once a year in October/November, so it’s best to disconnect from the Messaging until the problem is resolved in a new update.

    • Jen Jul 26, 2017

Do not allow the Entune system to read your text messages with emojis in them. In fact don’t read any text messages. My Sienna system crashed after one reading of a text with emojis. My dealership pretended to be clueless as to what would have caused the whole system to become inoperable: no radio cd etc. Thankfully it was still under warranty.

I have exactly the same issue with my 2014 Highlander Limited. The electronic system freezes, and eventually reboots, several times a day. I do have an iPod Classic connected via USB. I have an appointment today and will let you know what the “master electronics mechanic” says.

    • Deb P Mar 24, 2015

Hi Derek, did you ever get this resolved? I have the exact same problem with my 2015 XLE….

      • Guang Jun 16, 2016

Hi, I have this problem with my 2015 XLE. Last week, it restarted twice in half an hour.

        • Nypepe Oct 7, 2016

Hi, I had the same problem with my Highlander 2015 XLE. First in the dealer said that the screen saver it’s activated, they remove and one month later had more issues. The last week they replaced the radio.

  • Allen Feb 15, 2015

I have experienced the same problems with the Entune/Nav system in my 2014 Highlander. It freezes up completely requiring a reboot. Sometimes this works, sometimes I’m forced to pull over and turn the car off and restart. Very annoying if relying on the nav while on the highway…

  • James Feb 16, 2015

I have the same issue with my ’14 Highlander XLE. It restarts every few days or so with my phone connected via Bluetooth. An iPod is connected for maybe an hour a month. If it matters I have a LED bar mounted on a bull bar and HID headlights/fogs. I doubt that is the issue with the computer restarting but just listing anything extra.

  • Deb P Mar 24, 2015

I have a 2015 XLE, and had trouble yesterday with my display screen, which locked up after playing an old iPod Classic. It went blank for a bit, then went to Initial Sceen (Check Surroundings for safety, etc) and now that screen stays on permanently. It does go into camera view when I’m in reverse, but other than that, no other apps work, no audio, nav -nada. I tried reset by pushing power button near radio and holding for 3 seconds, and it reboots, into Welcome Sceen, but then back into Initial check surroundings screen and hangs there. Anyone else seeing this??? Have a call into service, but bet they’ll be stumped…..

    • B Feb 15, 2016

      What did service say?

  • Susan T. Apr 2, 2015

We have noticed that our LTD 2014 Highlander reboots while we are driving. It doesn’t seem to effect anything but the Entune system thankfully but it is deeply concerning that any computer in an operating vehicle could be so glitch.

  • Bobby Apr 7, 2015

Had my 2014 XLE screen crash yesterday while accelerating up a hill and connected to iPhone 6 audio via Bluetooth. Sigh… I hope it is only software… Because nothing else worked until system rebooted on its own 3 min later.

  • randy Apr 12, 2015

Deb P. Mine is doing the exact same thing. I purchased a 2015 Highlander LE Plus 2 months ago and my screen completely locked up and I can’t get it back.

    • Bayar May 26, 2016

Mine is doing exactly same thing. I have 2015 Highlander LE Plus and my doesn’t work. It’s being like that few days.

  • Paul Apr 16, 2015

2014 Highlander LE Plus issues with my iPod plugged into the USB port, it plays up to 80 songs of over1,600 and freezes. Have to unplug the iPod and, restart it. The iPod works fine everywhere else, plus I replaced the iPod. Apple documented that the iPod works and all settings are correct. Toyota claims it is not enTune radio problem. Been trying over a year for a resolution.

  • Paula Apr 17, 2015

I’ve had my off-the-dock 2015 Highlander Limited less than 3 months and was dissappointed to see my infotainment system crash and reboot itself just after pulling out of the driveway. My iPhone was connected via Bluetooth and I was listening to SiriusXM radio. I first thought maybe I hit a dark spot on the satellite when the radio stopped. Then I noticed a blank screen and the welcome screen refreshing a couple of times before the system resumed operation. Googling the issue led me to this site, which revealed this is a relatively new but known issue. I’ll report the issue to my dealer and fervently hope Toyota delivers a fix sooner rather than later.

  • Me Apr 30, 2015

I have a 2014 Hylander limited, the Nav/infotainment. (whatever you call it) crashes all the time! At least once or twice a day, it has gotten worse over the last year. I brought it to Toyota and they said they couldn’t do anything because it didn’t crash while they had it, this is bull.
I like the Hylander, but the crashing system while trying use navigation or just listening to music is very annoying. Another design flaw is the inability to do anything while driving, a passenger can’t enter an address to navigate to unless the car is stopped, can’t view the contact list to make a call even though it’s hands free and the voice command never understands what you are asking for, the glare is annoying as well, all they had to do was set it back into the dash a little, just like Acura does. My former car was an Acura TL, Tech package, never had any issues with the system at all and it was glare free! I wanted the Acura MDX (still do), but it was so wide it couldn’t fit in my garage side by side a 2nd car and be able to get out, lol…

they Hylander has some great features, comfortable leather seats, mine is fully loaded so it’s really nice..but the system sucks and is annoying.

  • Deb P May 14, 2015

I posted on this a month ago. My screen was locked up, but the camera still worked fine. They replaced the head unit. The replacement did not work in that the Nav input took literally minutes to put in one letter. Now I am on head unit replacement #2. Honestly, I haven’t had time to really check this one out. Love the car (though my leather is wrinkling in the same manner that others are describing).

  • Ben R May 14, 2015

I have the same problem with my 2014 Tundra. The entire system freezes for 4 to 5 minutes at a time. It has been to the shop 4 times to try to fix the problem and they are extremely reluctant to replace the radio. They keep trying new updates and none of them work. I have started taking a video of the radio when the problem occurs and bring that to the dealership to prove it is happening. They are trying to get a new radio approved but Toyota is not allowing them to order it because it costs them $3,600. I am completely fed up with it. Obviously this is a common problem, just fix it Toyota!

  • Eve May 27, 2015

I have a 2014 Highlander XLE since February 2014, so far the infotainment dash has crashed on me twice now while driving and was listening to my ipod nano. The whole thing froze and couldn’t do anything until it reboot itself. Very nerving and annoying. I’m thinking now what else? Love the car but it does have some minor things that need to be improved on. Hopefully it wont get worse and if it does Toyota better have found a way to address it at their cost.

  • Brian May 28, 2015

My 2014 Highlander crashes every time I receive a text to my phone while it is connected through bluetooth. It hasn’t always happened but is consistent now.

  • Jeff Wilde Jun 8, 2015

I have the same problem with my 2015 Highlander, radio/gps keeps freezing and restarting, points of interest say service not available. I have taken it back to the dealer but they won’t do anything because it is intermittent. I don’t have entune on my radio, this is not available in Canada. I’m afraid if I don’t get it fixed in the first 3 years it will cost me the $2000 for a new sim card.

  • Brett Jun 17, 2015

2014 Toyota 4Runner trail edition with the same freezing up problem. Completely freezes, cant turn radio off, cant adjust the sound, bluetooth phone calls are dropped, eventually the system reboots itself, or you can turn car off and reboot. Happened once.. and now happens frequently, 6 times on a 4 hour trip yesterday. Toyota needs to admit the problem and replace/repair the unit. There is no “software fix” and obviously not isolated incident.

  • Steve Jun 18, 2015

2014 Rav4 with similar problem. I parked the car to run into my office, 5 minutes later I get back out to the vehicle. I start it up and the display says to “Check my Surrounding”. I turned off the vehicle and looked all around the vehicle with nothing found. Get back in, Start it up, and ever since it looks like its uploading software or has the Toyota logo. Nothing else works, No Phones, No GPS, NO Radio, No display of anything. The phone was never connected to the vehicle other than Bluetooth. Now the dealer is saying I need over $800 in parts plus labor. Crazy! I have a fleet of about 15 Toyotas and have purchased close to 30 over the years. I’m Shocked to see Toyota Customer Service without any care to back up and support their product.

    • Gardy Nov 8, 2016

I have just called Toyota to report the same audio issue and they are referring me to the closest dealership which will charge big bucks. Why doesn’t Toyota act to please it’s customers?

  • janet Jun 23, 2015

Problem with audio, navigation and screens crashing and rebooting in my Acura MDX.

  • janet Jun 23, 2015

Problem with audio, navigation and screens crashing and rebooting in my 2014 Acura MDX.

    • Cara Mar 17, 2016

Janet, Did Acura ID or fix the issue? I’m having the same problem with my 2016 MDX and am wondering how to proceed with the service dept.

  • john Jun 23, 2015

Our 2016 Prius V5 Wagon has an Entune system with the same screen-freezing, bluetooth-disconnecting issues. This has been going on for awhile now. I found this forum online with threads doing back a year or two:

  • Valerie Jun 26, 2015

2014 4Runner with same GPS freeze and reboot issue. It loses the GPS nav setting and I have to pull over and put it in again. Also reboots without GPS setting when I’m just driving. Took it to dealer and they did an “update”, but the system still crashes on a daily basis.

  • Matthew Jun 28, 2015

I have a 2014 4Runner Limited — same problem as all of you guys. My Audio/Nav/Infotainment system just randomly freezes and then reboots. It can happen after just a few minutes of the car being on or can happen multiple times during a road trip. I just had the vehicle in for service on 6/23 & 6/24. They told me it needed a new card. I did a little research and looked on my service ticket when I picked it up. They simply swapped the SD card that is part of the radio. Same problem still after I picked it up. I am going to take back to my dealership next week and see what they say. I have called Toyota about this and they do not seem concerned. Toyota corporate blew me off and told me to take back to my dealer. This is a $42,000 car and this issue is total crap. They need to figure out the issue and get it fixed.

  • Nancy Jul 6, 2015

I have a 2014 highlander and am having the same problem with the navigation system freezing and rebooting – tons of fun when trying the use the navigation system to get somewhere.

  • Jonathan Jul 14, 2015

We too are having the radio crashing/rebooting issue. Although we don’t have to be using anything external plugged in or using the Nav system. It will just blackout and reboot. Sometimes it’s once a day or as much as 4 times in less than an hour. Very frustrating! Not real happy with this one!

  • Josh ruiz Jul 20, 2015

When we hook up Bluetooth in our tundra the music will play fine for about 20 min then it will freeze. It stays frozen for about 5 min then it reboots itself. When it reboots it takes ANOTHER 10 min before it connects again….I’ve been told it’s the head unit that needs an update?

  • Bryan Jul 23, 2015

Just purchased a 2014 Highlander Limited two days ago… It’s already back at the dealership because the audio/nav system continually crashes. My iPod being connected did seem to exacerbate the issue, but it crashed plenty of times without the iPod being connected as well. Not a great way to start off with a $40k purchase!

  • Greer Jul 29, 2015

I just called the dealership today to get an appointment about my 2015 Highlander system totally freezing for a few minutes then rebooting. I take it in friday but has anyone found a reason/solution for this?

  • Dan Jul 31, 2015

2014 tundra-after about a year now and audio system started getting glitchy. Screen will freeze up randomly;then crash; then reboot. Annoying. Tech pulled the pin(fuse) on the unit to disconnect from battery….we will see if it helps.

  • Erin Jul 31, 2015

2015 Highlander Limited- Entune crashed the first few times we tried using it, but realized we didn’t need it for anything so we stopped, thinking it would get fixed in an update. Our main problems involve connecting our iphones over bluetooth. Thought it was just the slightly outdated 4s models we had, but now it does the same disconnect randomly with our 6’s. Cuts off phone calls and streaming music. Also, the audio settings change back to factory constantly even though we have it set to not change settings when a phone connects. Every time the car gets turned on, its a guessing game to see if the settings have changed, even if its been the same phone in the car all week.

  • Anna Aug 13, 2015

I have issues with my 2014 highlander nav system crashing when my Iphone 6 is Bluetooth in to the system. No fixes for it yet. It will pause, crash then restart pretty much every road trip I’m on. Very aggravating.

I have a 2014.5 Toyota Camry, as I was leaving the house for work, I got in car start it up and the radio screen was blank. After a minute or so the screen light came on and it seems to look like it was downloading, after 10 to 15 seconds it went blank again. Audio was working perfect yesterday and the next day it’s gone for no apparent reason. What or how could this be and why…what caused it to do that, no one was bothering it or bumped it cause there’s no one inside my car but me…this is extremely aggravating!

    • rika moore Feb 26, 2016

My 2015 camry xle will not download my phone book. It did down load earlier and then suddenlt took it out. The wrather map doesnt work and my text messaging screen will give me the message but doesnt show the different replys to enable me to choose one. My dealer is aware of the weather map problem. Says they need to do a software check. Now they’ll have to check out the message and phone book too. I bought my car at brunswick milemart toyota in ohio. They seem very concered and willing to help. Its a brand new car. I have no doubt toyota will stand behind me. They havnt gotten a reputation for excellence by not fixing problems. All cars get problems. Especially mow with all the electronics. Will give update later!

  • Dana Roe Sep 7, 2015

I just got my 2015 4Runner a couple of weeks ago and even at the dealership the computer system kept rebooting (when synced to my Samsung notebook3 phone) about every 3 minutes. The salesman asked a maintenance worker to evaluate and he told me I may have too many contacts on my phone and if deleting some contacts didn’t help to go to my phone service (Verizon) because he had heard of some download they had that they had that would help this problem. I went to Verizon this week and the gentleman who assisted me hadn’t heard of this problem (or some software download) and even sat in my new vehicle to watch the Toyota computer system reboot every 3 minutes. After seeing that my phone stayed stable throughout his investigation he concluded that the problem was with the computer system and not my phone. I had to agree. I now have an email into the Toyota salesperson to see if he would help me with this issue. He is a Toyota employee and hopefully will be able to get a contact from Toyota that will help.

  • Cynthia Sep 21, 2015

Same here with my 2014 Highlander. Almost every day now, the screen freezes while the radio is on (and nothing else) and will reboot itself after a few minutes. A couple of times, it happened while I was using the navigation system and it was very annoying to lose navigation in the middle of a trip. A couple of other times, the system froze and rebooted with nothing turned on.

  • Mike Sep 29, 2015

I bought a 2015 Corolla in February. Recently the radio started rebooting every 10 seconds or so. The dealer replaced it and the replacement failed after a day and won’t even turn on.

  • Paula Oct 4, 2015

This started happening to me yesterday on a trip. GPS, radio, etc. freezing up, screen going dark, phone call lost, radio frozen on or off. Very scary. I will call the dealership this week. I have a 2014 Highlander.

  • Ben Oct 26, 2015

The freeze/reboot problem persists on my 2014 4Runner. I believe it’s a Bluetooth problem or another wireless system overload. Driving with 2 iPhones and an iPad seems to trip the freeze/reboot. I’ve learned to push in the power knob for 7 seconds to initiate reboot. Interestingly if I turn off wifi off my devices, the problem reduces. My theory is that there is some type of beta wifi loaded in the system that’s not a feature of the system. This is causing a processing logjam that crashed the system.

  • Luke Oct 30, 2015

2015 Toyota Highlander stereo/nav system is constantly freezing and rebooting. Terrible!

  • Julio Oct 31, 2015

I have th same issue and I took the car to the dealership and the service/maintenance are have no idea. They want to change the entire radio.

  • Julian Nov 22, 2015

I just bought a 2016 Limited Crew Max Tundra 6 days ago, and the radio started rebooting from the first day while just listening to AM radio. When I use my iPhone for Bluetooth music it freezes with a loud buzz and then reboots. Not sure how I will use the navigation for a long trip if it continues like this. Yesterday I took it back to the dealer and they kept it for 3 hours and then said that they could not find any problem with any codes. I do not think they have a clue regarding this issue despite how well it is documented. I opened a case with Toyota headquarters. Waiting to see what happens next….

  • Terri Nov 28, 2015

Same issue with 2014 Highlander Limited. Did not have any issues when I first bought the car in early 2014, but it has gotten progressively worse over time. I was wondering if it was happening when my cell phone (connected via Bluetooth) switches to a different cell tower or finds a new wireless signal. Haven’t been able to prove it.

  • Harry Nov 30, 2015

Ditto. Having same issues as others; however, the problem did not start until about 8 months after I purchased my 2014 Highlander Ltd. We also use IPhones with Bluetooth.??

  • Jackie Dec 14, 2015

Just bought a 2014 Toyota Highlander XLE . After one day the the radio shut down , rebooted its self but happend again . Should I return the vehicle ? I bought it through enterprise and they will let me return car if I don’t like it . Love the car but paid a lot if money for this . Jackie

    • Michael Dec 14, 2015

As you can see from this comments thread, this is a common problem. If you’re thinking that you will return this car and ultimately buy another Highlander, I wouldn’t bother. This seems to be a bug in their Entune system and it’s happening to pretty much everyone.

Should a vehicle like this be devoid of annoying glitches of this sort? Yes, for sure. It’s definitely annoying when it happens, but probably not a huge deal in the grand scheme of things. I just wish they’d find the bug and fix the software.

  • Martha Dec 18, 2015

I have a 2015 Sienna XLE, purchased in April 2015, and just had this problem for the first time yesterday. I was talking on my phone (iPhone 6s) when it did it the first two times. The third time it did it (separate car ride), I had FM radio on.

  • Evan Kushner Dec 20, 2015

I leased my 2015 Toyota Camry Hybrid in May of 2015. When the weather got little cool, the XM display on my radio would not be active it seems until the car has been running for 5-10 minutes. i had the service dept look at it, they replaced the radio and the same thing happens.

  • Ron H Dec 29, 2015

    2015 Highlander XLE here.
Nav system reboots two or three times a week. Nav requires reset to preferences always, sometimes dumps phone settings.
This is with bare system (nothing attached)
Total nuisance, and safety issue trying to reset while driving.
If this doesn’t get fixed, a deal breaker for any future Toyotas

  • Greg M Dec 29, 2015

2014 4-runner trail edition radio freezes and reboots everyday. Iphone 6 connected via Bluetooth if the head unit freezes during a call it disconnects telephone call and reboots several times. Ive tried deleting cell phone and re “pairing” the phone to the unit it works for a couple days then back to rebooting everyday again.

  • Joe cosrello Jan 2, 2016

My 2014 4runner radio crashes 3-5 times per hour. Freezes where I sometimes have to turn off the car, all buttons become inoperable then it reboots. Terrible when nav is being used.
Johnstons Toyota of middletown NY claims to know nothing of it. I spend $45000. And I can’t even enjoy my radio!! Any ideas whar to do. New radio maybe?

  • Joe Jan 3, 2016

Toyota Highlander XLE 2015 I’ve been having a problem with my radio it freezes up the first time it happened it was stuck on one radio station it was a religious radio station I was praying that there was nothing wrong with the radio I only had the vehicle for 10 months so I brought it to the dealership and they replaced the radio . A few days later it has black screen on the touchpad it would go on and off so I brought it to the dealership and they fixed again . Later on that day and froze up so I brought back to the dealership for the third time . They rebooted the computer system for the radio and told me not to connect my cell phone to the radio . Later on that day the radio screen went black . I made an appointment this Friday let’s see what happens it will be the fourth Time on bringing it in for the radio . Corporate Toyota if you can see this message please help or if anyone has the answer please help I have a fairly new vehicle without radio

  • Andre Jan 3, 2016

I have a 2016 with entune plus and on start up it won’t respond to touch or button input and when it starts to come around a button or touch input may not give a desired result. Contacted the dealer and they said they can’t fix something they cant duplicate and that i should record it happening. So that’s what I’ve done let’s see what happens.

  • Brad Jan 3, 2016

I have a 2014 Tacoma and since day one the radio has reset every time I plugged my iPod via USB and occasionally with just my phone connected via bluetooth. I contacted Toyota about this numerous times and from the sound of it they don’t plan on fixing the memory leak problem which causes a watchdog reset (software problem that causes your screen to freeze, buttons stop responding, and leads to radio restarting). I have also contacted them about other bugs with the radio that they haven’t addressed. I was told that having too many contacts on your phone can cause the radio to reset and could never get an answer on how much external data the radio can handle. My suggestion is to ditch the factory radio and go through the pain of installing an aftermarket radio.

  • H.Morales Jan 4, 2016

I have a 40 day old 2016 tacoma which has had rebooting issues since day one now SRS lights are on and the passenger seat belt light stays on even while my wife is occupying the seat and she is not a bantam weight.

    • Serge Apr 21, 2016

Hello….I have the same issue with the radio. Keeps rebooting. Was yours fixed ?

  • Trung vu Jan 6, 2016

    2014 highlander limited awd
Same problem. Several times on long trip, even without apps such as bt audio running. Dealer twice already “cant duplicate problem” and wont call toyota

    Very dissappointed for 45k$ car

  • Deisha Jan 7, 2016

I bought a 2015 highlander limited and I experiencing the issue with the radio spontaneous restarting.

  • Amu Jan 8, 2016

I just bought a new 2016 Highlander AWD. The Entune freezes on startup and wont work till 10 mins. After that it starts working…Took it to dealer and they said they cant duplicate so submitted the videos I made to Toyota Canada. I wonder if we can Sue Toyota over this?

  • JHolder Jan 20, 2016

I too just bought a 2016 Highlander XLE AWD at the end of 2015. Everything was fine for the first couple of weeks, but this morning it happened twice. In both cases, I turned the car on, put it in reverse and while backing up, the lights and entune turned off/on for a second and then the startup screen on entune showed.

  • S Jan 28, 2016

2016 Highlander LE Plus. This happens almost every morning. It seems to be worse in cold weather, or when the SUV is being run for the first time. I took it to the dealership and they said they could not replicate it. I might try and leave it with them over night, and get them to try it in the morning. That is 100%.

It is really awful. It makes my radio unusable for the first 10 minutes every morning. Also, my presets are constantly ruined because if you press one while it is frozen, it will reset that preset when it comes back.

    • C Feb 8, 2016

2016 LE Plus … I have an identical problem – head unit is unusable for 10 minutes, then it begins to get a “phantom touch” on the bottom of the screen (to the point where it’s a real distraction while driving.) After it goes haywire for a while it settles down and I can use it normally. This happens every time I start the car, particularly in cold weather.

  • Dan Feb 1, 2016

I have had problems with my multimedia system crashing and rebooting often on my 2015 Highlander XLE. I had a thumb drive for music in my USB port. I reported to the Dealer who claims there is no evidence of a problem from Toyota.

  • DAVID Feb 8, 2016

Well I just got a 2016 Highlander XLE and it was perfect for 5 days! This weekend my family and I took our first road trip and Entune crashed and restarted about 9 times in a 4 hour drive…It also did it again twice within 15 minutes. Not sure where to start but I will be contacting Toyota tomorrow morning and also scheduling an appointment with my local dealer. I’ve done tons of internet searching and see many have had this problem, but I don’t see anyone posting about a solution. Hopefully I can find one!

  • Marcy Feb 15, 2016

2016 Highlander that started losing the multimedia system last month. It turned off and rebooted itself. Didn’t do it again until today on the way to get first service. The dealer said they had no fix for it and played it off as software update. When we left the dealership it was completely dead. Had to turn back and take it back to dealer. They took pics of the screens and said they had to order a whole new radio.

  • Cindy Feb 19, 2016

I purchased a 2016 Toyota Highlander Platinum 6 weeks ago and I too have been experiencing this issue. The screen goes black, the warning screen comes on and the entire system reboots. it happened to me 4 times in a 30 minute time frame. I wonder if it is electrical in nature as my iPhone was charging and when the “crash” and reboot occurred, I heard the beeping sound associated with the phone being attached to the charger as the system flashed back on. I am taking the car to the dealership this afternoon with this entire thread copied and in hand.

    • James Mar 18, 2016

I also bought a 2016 Toyota Sequoia Platinum in November 2015. The Entune audio navigation system reboots so much it’s testing the limits of my medication. Went to Toyota service March 2016 and one rep said, I’ve never heard of the problem. My rep replied, look on the Internet ‘it’s a problem Toyota doesn’t seem to care about and there is NO fix.’ I paid $75,000 for a working vehicle. HEY TOYOTA!! Get your head out of the sand, recognize there’s a problem, and find a fix!

      • James Mar 19, 2016

UPDATE — Received a call from Toyota service manager after calling and complaining, yesterday (2nd time). He said that he literally just received an email (3/19/2016) from his area manager regarding the reboot fix (Entune update). He asked what number my Entune started with. After looking with my glasses on, I found it on the bottom right corner, below SD card slot. He said did it start with the number “5”? Yes, I said. He informed me that is the model Toyota is working on to fix. He said call him at the end of the month to see if it’s available. Are you sure I asked? He was positive it was in the works and it will be out very, very soon. (I’ll be holding my breath)

  • David Emami Feb 21, 2016

Update, took my car to the dealer a few weeks ago and they couldn’t replicate the system restarting. The tech told me it’s a known issue by Toyota and they will have an update in March that should fix this problem. Came back just a few days ago with the entune system restarting on video (have your passenger take it) of while we were driving, and now the dealer is ordering me a new head unit. I’ll try and do an update on this site when that happens. So many people on this thread but not many following up with a solution.

  • Cedric Mar 4, 2016

new-to-me 2015 – Highlander limited 1/15 production 13k miles – mine froze last night while navigating, as I changed radio channels. At first, unresponsive to channel-change arrows; then blank screen, welcome screen, blank screen, welcome screen and eventually it started working again. First time but I’ve only owned it a month.

  • DAvid Mar 8, 2016

Update-got my new head unit installed by the dealer and so far no issues, although I have not driven it much over the last week.

  • Jason Mar 11, 2016

I’m starting to have problems with my 2015 Toyota sienna. First problem is with the cruise control button it starts to Flickr as you’re driving it is extremely annoying and distracting. also my stereo system starts freezing and crashin. The car is only a year old with 12,000 miles on it

I have a 2014 4runner limited and the bluetooth discconects ALL the time. No hands free. Then my system reboots often. Total pain for $49,000. Please help

  • Tonia Mar 17, 2016

I’m at the Elgin IL Toyota dealer at my 15000 m ck up and I told the technician how my phone/entertainment unit froze up 2 times today! Until it reboots itself! They said they couldn’t find a problem and if it happens again I should come back and tgey will notify Toyota! Are you kidding me they acted like they had never heard about this but here in reading all these other similar complaints! Very unhappy right now!

  • Jimmy Mar 18, 2016

Just left Longo Toyota in my 2016 Highlander XLE AWD. The Nav system already has issued. Reboots over fand over again. I can’t use it at all. They are going to replace the intune unit. I hope this fixes my issue.

  • Tom Mar 24, 2016

We have a 2014 4runner and have the same problem with Entune. It seems to lock up and then reboot. It happens with and without the iphone connected.

  • Roby Mar 29, 2016

My 2016 Highlander Limited’s nav/computer intermittently shuts down. Screen goes black and reboots. It’s a pain while traveling in the middle of a congested city and the nav route quits. My son’s 2015 4Runner TRD has a similar problem. His unit freezes all the time. Toyota needs to recall or TSB these issues.

  • Krystle Apr 7, 2016

My 2015 Toyota Venza crashes/reboots all the time whether it be the radio or Bluetooth connection. There doesn’t need to be anything plugged in. I haven’t brought it to the dealer yet, but I am going to soon. Just saw someone’s post about the number starting with a 5, mine does too.

    • Frank May 22, 2016

Does it still reboot if the Bluetooth phone is disconnected?

  • Billie Apr 8, 2016

Sitting at a Toyota dealer now trying to get my engine crash problem fixed. 2014 highlander XLE with 41000 miles and extended warranty may not cover this issue! Very frustrating!

  • Bruce Apr 9, 2016

On the hour long drive to the dealer today the system froze, crashed and rebooted 6 times. The last freeze up was when I pulled into the service greeting area so the greeter got to see the freeze and, right on cue, it rebooted. Another symptom of this problem is that phone calls cannot be placed. The directory works but when it tries to call out there is an error message.
As promised, they took the car to perform a software update that contained “bug fixes.” 45 minutes later I had the car back and began the 1 hour trip home. I’m happy to report that there were no freezes or reboots during the trip and the phone called out with no problem. Time will tell but so far it looks like a good fix.
On the receipt, under parts, it reads as follows:
    “12022 ? Intermittent radio rebooting EL1318 87-74 Software Update”
This was, of course, covered under warranty but I think they’d probably do it for free even if the car was beyond the warranty mileage since it not a wear and tear item.
    Leave a Com

    • Jason Stellema Jun 2, 2016

I was just charged $54.88 for an ‘update’ on a 2015 Highlander Limited that I purchased in Dec ’14 dealer certified. Furious to say the least.

  • Henrik Apr 22, 2016

The entune system in my 2014 highlander xle has had problems with freezing since day 1.
The most frustrating part is freezing in the middle of a call while using Bluetooth. Not to mention freezing issues while using GPS. Talked to the dealer got no help. Toyota is not owning the problem and want nothing to do with correcting it. Otherwise happy with the vehicle.

    • vantaamike May 1, 2016

Since infotainment systems have become huge in new vehicles I ask why hasn’t more manufacturers used Entune.? Based on these stores, it’s easy to see why they don’t. GM, Ford are using a much more reliable and intuitive system. Ford is using Blackberry software which is very reliable, meanwhile GM’s developed Intellilink. Toyota meantime goes against the grain and gives you this Entune garbage.! Shame on Toyota. They could easily developed their own system. Certainly they are going to go that route soon.

  • Rudy Apr 30, 2016

2015 Sequoia Limited has the same issue. While talking on the phone or streaming music via Bluetooth (iPhone 5). The call is disconnected and neither the buttons nor the touch screen work. Then the screen turns black and eventual the Toyota symbol appears. There seems to be a way to update the software but no way to check for updates. I called Toyota Entune Support 1-800-331-4331 and they said since it was the JBL system that I would need to pay for updates. Decided not to argue with them and just going to call the dealer on Monday.

  • Suresh Chatakondu May 2, 2016

I have 2015 Toyota Highlander Limited. I was driving car day before yesterday (4/30/2016) and it restarted several times. Seriously wrong with this. Just called dealer and see what they have to say.

  • Bruce Campbell May 2, 2016

purchased a 2015 XLE Highlander last March. About 2 months ago the Entune/Nav system started to go blank, completely reboots itself. Have never had any devices plugged into the system although do have phones on Bluetooth. Happens every month or so.

  • Kevin Larson May 9, 2016

I just bought a 2016 tacoma with the premium etune package and now mine will randomly crash and reboot repeatedly for around 10mins after having it a month. the dealer said starting off if it doesn’t happen while we have have it, there’s nothing to fix. kind of a weird first thing to say. it’s like they know there’s a problem but ignores it until caught.

  • John May 12, 2016

Same problem with engine crashing. 2015 Highlander. Unit replaced and still does not work with my Samsung phone. I am nothe a techie but my son is. It works with his phone but will not connect to mine. He said it might be the number of contacts I have 1200. He has 200. Now waiting for dealer to open so I can see if they have a solution for the third time. However it worked fine for the first year of ownership. Will let you know if it is a download of contact problem.

  • josef May 13, 2016

Having above problemes with. Freezing on 2014 toyota sequoia platinum

  • Janet Eakin May 14, 2016

We have a 2015 Highlander that has the freezing / rebooting problem described in many of the emails on this sight. Extremely frustrating when using the navigation system to guide you to an unfamiliar address. I will definitely refer my Toyota dealer to this sight.

  • jay May 17, 2016

2014 highlander, 2 system crashes over 4 months both within a week following scheduled maintenance. Crash same as described above, basic use, no entune , input or bluetooth at the time just xm radio. Short internet search reveals this is a common problem. I only see one positive outcome in the comments preceeding mine. Toyota need to step up!

  • Elliot May 21, 2016

My 2015 highlander audio entunes system freezes almost every time I drive.

  • Frank May 22, 2016

I have a 2015 Venza XLE with 1780 miles on it. Everything was working well until 2 days ago the navigation/stereo system began to randomly reboot itself. I have an AT&T Samsung S6 connected via Bluetooth. The phone recently upgraded itself to Android version 6.0.1. I took my Venza to the dealer and they upgraded the nav/stereo software. The system is still having reboot issues when the phone is connected and my phone contacts won’t transfer. Going back to dealer so they can open a trouble ticket tomorrow.

  • Jason Stellema Jun 2, 2016

Had a few freezes and occasionally the screen would go dark so I mentioned it today prior to my scheduled service on my ’15 Highlander Limited. I purchased it certified in December ’15. Long story short they ran an ‘update’ and charged me $54.88 because I am over 36,000 miles. The best part of the story is that when they returned my vehicle to me it was stuck on the welcome screen and I couldn’t get anything to work. I drove back and after unhooking my battery and reloading the ‘update’ with their reusable USB stick it was working. Just curious if anyone else has been charged for a TSB update. My paperwork even said ‘Ran customer radio number. Vehicle qualified for update under TSB’. Am I the only one that finds the $54.88 charge insane? Imagine Microsoft charging for Windows updates on an OS less than 2 years old. Something isn’t right.

  • Nik Jun 4, 2016

I have a 2016 Tundra with the rebooting issue when a device is plugged in to the usb port. They have already replaced the “unit” once. It happend again so they said to monitor it before they replace it again since it hapend only once.

  • Barb Jun 6, 2016

I have been having the same issue with my 2015 Camry Hybrid XLE and the dealership is acting like they have never heard of the issue before. So far they have replaced the radio and it is still happening whether or not my iPhone 5S is paired or not. The dealership is saying that they are unable to reproduce this so Toyota says that there is nothing that they can do at this time. It is frustrating to say the least. For a while my USB port was not working/charging but they did fix that issue. My only thought now is to purchase a action video camcorder to try and capture this issue and then maybe Toyota will do something.

  • Jerry Jun 6, 2016

I’ve had this problem on my ’14 Tacoma since nearly the beginning. I’m not an electrician, but I notice it happens more when wet outside, and when my phone is connected to BT. Even moreso, it happens when the phone receives a text/call/notification, like that burst of information trips something. I would venture a guess that a resistor or something is improperly sized, allowing a surge of electricity where it should not be, and another sensor/failsafe gets tripped, which causes the freeze-up/reboot.

At least I find this more plausible now seeing everyone else’s issues. At first I figured it was a shorting wire somewhere in the dash.

  • Lisa Mohwinkel Jun 11, 2016

2014 Toyota Corolla S. Entune stereo is junk! Won’t load.. Do anything. Toyota has been no help.. They said they would get back to me the three times spoken on phone… Never did. Dealer says needs to be replaced for $1167.00! All this happened after last update. Buy a new radio after every update?

    • Lisa Mohwinkel Jun 11, 2016

      Entune is junk!

  • Steve Horton Jun 15, 2016

I have a 2016 Highlander Limited that has had the same issue. I owned the vehicle 1 week when it started. I have taken it to the dealer for repair 2 times, once for a factory reset and once to have radio replaced. Before I was a mile away from the dealer it crashed again. When I returned they acted as if they had never seen this problem and informed me that since they couldn’t make me happy, I should just not come back there but take it somewhere else. Have contacted Toyota Customer Care numerous times and each time someone will call with a resolution “tomorrow”. Not sure when tomorrow is coming, but I am sure that I would not recommend a Toyota vehicle to my worst enemy. 45K for a car with now radio, navigation or hands free phone is not working for me.

  • Nelson Jun 16, 2016

Approximately 1 year after purchasing my Toyota Camry XSE the Entune unit just shut down. It will not power on again.
I previously owned a 2010 Toyota Highlander which had a similar multi-media unit. The multi-media unit in the Highlander lasted four years before I had to replace it. Toyota is aware of the problems with the Entune units and does nothing to correct them.

  • Marie Jun 22, 2016

2014 Rav limited, same problems, frozen screen , I’ve been a loyal Toyota fan since the 70’s, this problem and Toyota’s seemingly lack of interest in our problem will drive me elsewhere

  • A Jun 25, 2016

I have a 2014 4Runner. I’ve been having the same problem. My radio just freezes and reboots itself. I first thought it was a Bluetooth thing but it happened when I was listening to the radio. It’s really frustrating when I’m using the nav and it reboots. I’ve read a few forums and it seems I may need to take it to a dealership for an update. I’m a little concerned. I hope this will not become a yearly thing that I will have to pay for.

  • Janneke Jun 27, 2016

I said ‘forget device’ of my iphone on my hilux 2016 audio system and now it doesnt want to connect when I try to pair the device again? How do I reboot the system or what do I do?

  • Luci Kent Jul 2, 2016

What is the Entune tech in OK’s contact info?

  • R Eck Jul 14, 2016

Had the same issue as nearly everyone else on here. Unlike most others on here my dealer knew exactly what the issue was, performed the software update while doing other routine maintenance and I was outta there in about 90 minutes. No hassles, no charges at all, even though I am at 38K, just out of warranty. For everyone’s info, the invoice references TSB 0035-16 so if your dealer is claiming ignorance (hard to imagine) have them look up that TSB. Had the issue twice on way to dealer this morning, no issues in 30 minutes of driving since. Test will be on long trip this weekend, will update after that.

  • Scott Jul 20, 2016

Our 2014 Highlander stereo system also crashes and has to reboot and this is happening on a daily basis. Toyota seems to think that this is a rare occasion but it sounds like this is not so rare amongst highlander owners. I am going to try to run it without plugging in the USB for the iPhone chargers and see what happens – will let you know.

  • Brett Aug 15, 2016

Same issue and getting worse in my 2015 4Runner. Reboots several times a day. I don’t have any thing plugged in just my iPhone hooked into Bluetooth.Dealers say they can’t fix it when its working when I bring it in. Taking it back again since my maintenance is due

  • Steve Aug 15, 2016

My one month old 2016 4Runner just started doing this same thing. I called up Toyota and they said they litterally just found a fix. The update just came out today (8/15/2016) and can be done at any Toyota dealership. I was told it’s covered so it should not cost anything unless you’re out of warranty.

    • Darren Aug 22, 2016

Hi Steve, has Toyota solved this issue for you? I have a 2016 Highlander Hybrid XLE, bought in June, that is experiencing the same issues. Toyota Canada is saying that they’re not aware of it.

  • Leo Aug 24, 2016

Experienced the same freezing issue today 8/24/2016. I have a 2014 Highlander Limited. No radio, GPS nothing. Shut the ignition off and restarted and it seemed to work itself out after maybe 10 minutes. Can’t take it to the dealer while it’s working. Hope it does not happen permanently after the warranty expires.

  • Darryl C Sep 17, 2016

I have a 2016 Tacoma the JBL audio and nav system. Note the Nav system just did an update and I am running a 6s Plus with IOS 10.0 to include I’m running Entune over Bluetooth. Today September 16th 2016 the system has rebooted at least 3 times in the past hour. It started doing this after the system connected to Pandora using the shared data with Entune. It had not been and issue before I allowed the data to come in using Entune and funny thing is I have my shared data turned off. This to me says that Entune App possibly bypasses the shared data allowing the phone to be used without pulling data on the metered portion of the phone software. I have confirmed that statement by checking that when looking and my shared data useage and it still says 0 Bytes used.
Ok I hope this info is explained clear enough someone can make sense of it all. I’d really like to push Toyota to step up sooner than later to address this issue.

    That’s my two cents.

  • Dave Sep 23, 2016

I fought the constant reboot problem for 2 years with my Highlander XLE entune system…no fix exists….just lots of broken promises….nor does Toyota, Edmunds ratings or anyone else care…traded it before it was out of warranty…love the new Mazda CX-5…long time Toyota owner…never again….they simply don’t care anymore.. My superb dealer..tried everything but in the end noted simply that it can’t be fixed, have a good day…..even though under still under factory warranty….so happy it’s not in my driveway anymore.

  • lex Oct 4, 2016

this is a class action in the making. how can we tolerate this? we pay $40k+ for our vehicles and toyota gives garbage. we should be able to have quiet enjoyment of the system they portrayed to us, but instead give us years of fighting to get what we paid good money for!

  • Summer Oct 6, 2016

I have a 2014 Highlander with the exact same problems. I’ve had the entire radio replaced (under warranty), and that didn’t help. I don’t use Entune, and I have this issue whether my phone is connected via Bluetooth or USB. Once it rebooted 11 times in one hour.
My local Toyota dealership said it’s a problem with my phone (it’s an iPhone 6), but I had the same problem with my iPhone 5. They then opened an issue ticket at corporate and said that someone would call me to set up a service appointment, but it’s been months and nothing has happened. My husband and I have played phone tag with the account representative for weeks. She finally stopped returning our calls.

  • Mike Oct 6, 2016

I’m glad to see so many others have this problem. I mean, I’m not glad, just happy it’s not just us!
Exact same symptoms as those above. The dealer replaced the head unit but that solved nothing. After that they essentially refused to even look at the car.
I contacted Corporate through their consumer assistance portal and actually ended up talking with someone. They promised to work out something with the dealer, and I’ve never heard back from anyone or been able to reconnect.
At this point we want Toyota to reimburse us for the cost of installing an aftermarket head unit, preferably with actual iPhone connectivity.
    This is nuts.

  • Steve Oct 9, 2016

I have a 2016 Highlander XLE and have experienced the Exact same symptoms as those above with the Entune head unit and software. I have had the unit reboot during navigation mode with and without my iPhone 6 connected. Dealer told me to try and capture the reboots on my cell phone, pretty damn ridiculous to accomplish while driving. On top of this Toyota expects us to pay $150+ for map system upgrades! I have a 2011 Highlander Limited with a base AM/FM/XM – no Nav and no problems.

  • CARL ECKERSON Oct 17, 2016

2015 Highlander Limited Platinum, Dashboard screen goes blank, but reboots itself. Annoying but how to troubleshoot? Only recently noticed, miles 23K, common fact on Highway R/T, three times each way once while passing High Power Line and two underpasses, is this antenna signal or remote location?

  • Laurie Oct 23, 2016

My entune system just started freezing this month

  • Pam Oct 26, 2016

bought a 2016 highlander two months ago brand new. Entune has completely rebooted itself while driving four times. Two of those times were within five minutes of each other. Screen goes completely black and lose audio.

I too purchased a 2015 4runner, am having similar and ome a me issues. I hadthe new updates installed by dealer . when connecting Bluetooth o my phone and the contacts r downloading the radio/navigation freezes and reboots. I was told by the dealer it was my phone. Samsung Galaxy s5, my phone has no other issues. I was waiting to c f anyone else had the issue. I cannot even connect to use 4runner radio speakers for phone calls or txt messages via USB cable . This feature of hands free phone and navigation was why I purchad ed the vehicle new an am getting no help from toyota on it as of yet. I hope they don’t wait until it is out of warrenty as the problem started the month I bought the vehicle. IF anyone has any answers or info to this issue I would b extremely grateful! PLEASE share, if I find a solution I I’ll definitely post it.

2014 Toyota Corolla…2 years old…radio keeps rebooting, dealership won’t turn it off. Cost to fix …wait for it…$2900…

  • Katie Nov 25, 2016

I have a 2014 rav4 limited edition and I am having problems with the radio not producing any sound. The audible beep of the buttons, CD player, radio, nothing seems to make noise. I’m 5000kms over my warranty (kicking myswlf hard for not mentioning it months ago when it first happened) and they are quoting me $5000 for a new radio . I’m furious, how is the warrenty on a non wearing part the first to end? Is anyone else having this problem? I’m going to call Toyota Canada and start my fight and just wondering if this is a common problem.

  • Elaine Dec 14, 2016

I purchased a 2014 Highlander Limited w/technology package new. The radio is constantly rebooting. The car is now 2 years old and this reboot is happening approximately 4 times in a 20 mins car ride. I find this to be unacceptable. From all of the complaints I have read on this page this is a major problem that Toyota is just skirting under the rug! We paid extra for the technology package and it is garbage!! (not to mention the navagation system maps are about 2-4 years old in a brand new car) I have wanted a Highlander for several years now, love the car but this technology glitch has to be addressed! Toyota own up to this issue, have a recall and fix the problem!!!

  • Don Dec 26, 2016

We are having terrible problems with the Navigation/Radio system in our new 2016 Toyota Highlander XLE. During the Christmas Blizzard which hit Utah, we were driving from Colorado back to far northern Utah and the system kept shutting down, then rebooting. As most of our drive was getting 12-34″ of snow, the thing would die and we could not tell where we were. We lost service many, many times going over the high and twisty passes. Totally unsatisfactory.

  • Doua Dec 27, 2016

I’ve had entire problems on my ’15 camry.

  • Gerry Dec 27, 2016

I took our 2014 Highlander in for repair today and told the technician of the Navigation/Radio reboots that have occurred over the past few months. Was later told that the Radio needed to be replaced at my cost since we are over the 36K miles (but less than 3 years). Can’t quite understand how this is considered wear and tear so decided to search the issue beforehand (and found this link thankfully). Needless to say I cancelled the order as there does not appear to be permanent solution. I will keep checking and pressing Toyota like the others in hopes they do the right thing and issue a recall.

I am experiencing the freeing problem on my 2014 Corolla. I am at 32,600 miles. My car froze on the Toyota logo for about 15 minuite. When I started the car back up again it looks like it is trying to install an update but then it stops, goes black and then about 2min. later it tryst again to do the install.

Bought a 2014 rav4 XLE about a month ago, didnt have problems until last week. It’s been in a constant freeze mode for about five days now. I got an aftermarket subwoofer installed 2 weeks ago and when i took it into the dealer they immediately blamed the installers of the subwoofer, which to me doesn’t make a whole lot of sense now while looking at all who are having these issues, i want answers and I think toyota needs to provide us with some.

2015 Toyota Camry. The car worked fine for 2 years now in the past couple weeks it randomly rebooted once. Then the next day it happened again. Then a few days later it happened twice in one car ride. Then I was trying to pause a DVD that was playing and the screen was frozen and didn’t respond at all to touch, and then just rebooted by itself. Now it’s happening almost every car ride, often multiple times within mere minutes. It’s more than a nuisance, it’s a safety issue. Took it to the dealer and Toyota dealer said they were aware of the issue and they claim that the Corrective action is reprogramming not replacing, but that if the problem persists they would replace. I told them I was skeptical that reprogramming would work considering what I’ve read online, but they said all they could do was this update for now and if the problem persists come back. they also said the update seemed to be working on highlanders and siennas.. but I take that with a grain of salt. i’m bookmarking this page now so I can follow up for you guys.

  • Yvonne Chism Jan 28, 2017

I have had the system replaced and it still freezes up afterwards. I am afraid it will require another replacement after the warranty expires.

  • Lisa Jan 31, 2017

I’ve had this same problem and decided to google it and found this forum. My 2014 Highlander Platinum screen will randomly freeze with no iPhone or otherwise plugged in. The screen either freezes or goes black. No GPS, Sirius, etc. This has happened twice on a trip. So frustrating and thinking of trading for this very reason. This sounds like an issue Toyota should address.

I have a 2014 Corolla LE CVT with Navigation, as I was leaving the house for work and got in car start it up and the radio screen was blank. After a minute or so the screen light came on and it seems to look like it was rebooting, after 10 to 15 seconds it went blank again. And same screen with rebooting, and after 10 to 15 seconds it went blank again. This keeps on repeating and radio won’t function .It’s gone for no apparent reason. What or how could this be and why.
The problem started after 23 months after I purchased my 2014. In fact, in 2014 Nov, I waited 6 weeks to get this model car.
    Very disappointed for 30K$ car

My 2015 sienna radio also locks up and freezes. It happens several times an hour.

  • Timothy Jalbert Feb 13, 2017

Radio locks up and reboots often

  • EE Feb 18, 2017

My 2014 Toyota Highlander Entertainment systems will freeze up during a cell call and I cant be heard on the far end even thought the call is still in progress. I have to reset the system, if I want to use it for another 10 minutes. Also it might reboot itself without provocation one or more times. It worked fine for 2 years before this started happening. Very annoying and the dealer claimed they have not heard of anything like this. Loose wire or bad software update is my opinion.

  • G Leath Feb 22, 2017

2015 Highlander Limited stereo freezes up & has to be turned off several times before it will function properly. I can be playing music from my phone or using the maps app from my phone or talking on the phone & it will freeze. The screen & side panel buttons will not respond. Under the phones Bluetooth setting it still shows connected but the car system isn’t working. These apps will function through the phone itself when the car audio fails so it is not the phone. This car is too new & too expensive for these problems to be happening in my opinion. Haven’t contacted a dealer yet and will probably suffer costly changes if I want them to try & fix it.

  • Ed Mar 5, 2017

Well I have started having problems with the navigation system on my 2015 Highlander LE. It occasionally locks up for no apparent reason, sometimes just listening to the radio and other times when in navigation mode. Happened to me twice the other day. Seems to be getting more frequent. Would be nice if a Toyota technician would comment on this problem and what if anything is being done about it. Looks to be, from the number of comments, a fairly common issue.

  • C Smith Mar 7, 2017

I have problem with my 2015 Toyota Avalon my contact would cause the radio to reboot I troubleshoot it down to a lot of contact about 177 it’s seem to be only handler about 90 to 100 contact before it would reboot.
So I deleted some o my contact to about a 100 but it work fine.
But it’s not fine to be limited to how many contact you can use.
Hopefully Toyota would fix these problem or make the radio provider replace this radio after all a car that causes you well over 50,000 would be in top notch that including the radio.

Has this update worked for you? I’ve started to have the same problem on my 2014 4Runner.

    • Patrick Durham Jan 12, 2018

Thank you so much for posting this, Lee! I was able to download and install the update by myself. It’s very easy. You just download it onto a USB drive (min. 2GB size), and follow the instructions to install it when the vehicle is running. Hopefully this will fix all of the crashing/rebooting problems I’ve been having on our 2015 Highlander.

I have a 15 Tundra CM and the nav/entune suite freezes and reboots occasionally. I have to restart the truck sometimes. Any answers to this annoying issue?

  • Alice Jul 16, 2017

My nav console froze up this week. No radio, no nav, touchscreen did not work. First time, it was temporary. Second time it lasted for the rest of the day. Yesterday, it seemed to be working. This is still under warranty, but I am concerned that the dealership will not be able to assess the problem if it is intermittent. But these posts seem to indicate that the problem is not a one-off.

  • Hannah Jul 26, 2017

Has anyone got to the bottom of this. I have a Toyota Highlander 2010 Limited. Last week my maps cut out and then the screen came back on and said no DVD map, then cut out again and came up with system loading don’t turn off power, then loads it self back to normal in a few minutes Iv had it happen like 4-5 times in one day or just once a day!!

  • Rich Gotz Jul 26, 2017

I have the rav4 with entun I lost the Nav system, bluetooth, and the rest of the apps. radio and sirus works dealership does not have any answers. I tried disconnecting battery hoping it may reboot no luck. Thank god I kept my OLD roadmaps. Rich

  • David B Jul 28, 2017

Have 2017 Prius Prime with entune with JBL. Freezes and reboots about 4 times a week. Use iPod classic which also needs resetting frequently. Also, random play repeats song order a lot. Give it up Toyota. I want Apple CarPlay.

  • David A. Jul 29, 2017

I have a 2016 RAV4 that I bought in April of 2017, it is now July 2017. The vehicle was a”demonstrator” and had 5,000 miles on the odometer. Two weeks ago my GPS started freezing, blacking out and trying to restart. Each time I would pull to the side of the road, turn everything off and restart. It would work for a few minutes and then repeat the freeze, blackout and restart sequences. That day was the last day of my “free introductory subscription” to SiriusXM satellite radio. I like that service but not enough to pay their monthly/annual prices. On the last day of the free subscription they bombarded me with ads to continue the service and they really increased the audio volume. That is when the problems began. I wonder whether or not their satellite signals may have confused and frustrated the computer. It has been bad ever since. The dealer’s service department cannot replicate the problem and they seem to act like there is nothing that can be done. I think that SirisXM is the culprit. Has anyone else had similar problems that mesh with SirisXM advertisement bombardment?

  • Matt Aug 6, 2017

We just bought 2014 xle 29000 miles. Radio system reboots. We found out 2 days after we bought it that it had this issue.

  • Kelly Aug 19, 2017

I have the same problem. I leased my 2015 highlander xle almost three years ago. Within 6 months of leasing it the entire navigation and radio would freeze. Then it would turn itself off. After a few minutes it would reboot. It’s been doing it for three years on a daily basis. Also, my exclamation maintenance light keeps coming on for no reason. Over the last two years it would come on and never turn off. Each time i would take it to get looked at and they would say there’s nothing wrong and reset it. Three weeks later it would do it again. After all these problems, I’ve decided I am not going to purchase this car at the end of my lease in November. I hope they have worked these kinks out in the newer models. I love the car. It’s a shame that there’s already mechanical/electrical issues with it though.

  • Dave B. Aug 24, 2017

My 2015 Sienna does the same thing only when the wife’s iPhone is connected to it.

Will disconnect her phone entirely to see if it stops acting buggy. I know this isn’t the best way to troubleshoot an intermittent issue, but I don’t feel like ripping the navi out to do software testing.

  • Joan H. Aug 26, 2017

I purchased a 2016 Highlander last June. It is now 1yr1month old and has exhibited the “shut-down” problem 4 times. I took it to the dealership yesterday and they listed the problem as radio failure and downloaded new software. When we questioned the service manager we were told it is because we have a phone attached using bluetooth. We asked if this was a permanent fix and he told us no, we would have to have it updated yearly to avoid the problem. Were we lied to? Where is the class action?

  • Sophia Sep 17, 2017

Bought my 15 Highlander Hybrids June 30th 2017 and three weeks later – once I plugged in a USB stick – it started regularly freezing and rebooting on me. I wonder if it has to do with the USB stick confusing it somehow?

  • Duane Strickland Sep 20, 2017

I have recently had two freeze/resets on my 2015 Highlander. Last one was while using the GPS, made my drive past my exit. Looking for any type of recall or technical issue.

  • Drew Sep 25, 2017

2014 Highlander Entune system locks up for no apparent reason. With no external devices connected, the entune system locks up , disconnects calls and will respond to no controls for about 2 minutes . Dealers say they have never seen the problem?

  • Chris Murray Nov 4, 2017

My 2014 LTD Highlander NAV/AUDIO freezes up while on trips and then reboots when ever it feels like it. Come On Toyota fix this issue . Love the vehicle and paid a great deal of money for it ,I don’t expect this from Toyota Quality. With all the complaints, its time to do the right thing and fix the software problem now.

  • Molly Nov 5, 2017

The radio/sound system in my 2015 Highlander freezes & then reboots on a regular basis- several times a day. Any one know why??

  • Deidi Nov 7, 2017

I have a 2014 highlander limited platinum just purchased. Can anyone give me help on why the 1 of the DVD players in the head rest will come on then turn right back off?

  • Mark Foster Nov 16, 2017

My 2015 Highlander limited is experiencing the same problems as many other Toyota owners. First my system would freeze up while using my I phone 6 plus, then reboot after several minutes then restart. After quite a few instances of this I quit using my I phone in the vehicle but now my XM raido creezes up then resets itself after a few minutes. This has been going on for over a year. Not acceptable for a nearly $60,000 vehicle. Frustrated to say the least!

  • Chris Nov 17, 2017

All audio on my 2015 RAV 4 stopped, I could see volume control was ok, FM, CD,hands free navigator was responding to request but not talking to me, I tried the mute button a few times, increases volume… Nothing.. recently in for service (only 6k miles on it) … Was driving back to dealer for something else when it stopped audio got to dealer, I didn’t show it to tech to verify before turning off engine, after restarting car, it was working fine again so NTF… If it happens again I’ll have to video tape it… Murphy law…

  • Chris Feb 5, 2018

i have this happening to my 2015 Toyota tacoma truck. anything bluetooth connected and it freezes the entire system.

  • Lori Mar 11, 2018

On March 16, 2017, Lee reported a fix for this problem. After that about 50 complaints showed up complaining about the problem and asking if anyone had a fix.
    1) Does anyone read the inputs?,
    2) If you have tried Lee’s fix, does it work??

  • David Apr 7, 2018

Do you have a Tile product on your keychain. I had Tile Mate and through a series of events I finally realized that the Tile App was keeping my stereo from reading my texts and emails to me. I took it off and I no longer have a problem.

  • Larry Apr 10, 2018

2014 4runner, same problem. Random crashes, freezes, reboots, partial disconnects (radio plays when phone call in progress, then reconnects). Not what I expect in a Toyota.

  • Gordon E May 13, 2018

I have. 2014 highlander limited hybrid. It rebooted 6 times in the same day traveling to Florida. The dealer installed an update and the rebooting has not been an issue since. That was 2015. Now the entire system will freeze up. No touch screen no controls on the sides and no control from the steering wheel. After 10 miles or so it wakes up. It happened first in 2016 in cold weather but now happens even in 60 degrees. Very disturbing for such a high end car

  • Jim Jul 7, 2018

    2015 Avalon
Just want to add my frustrations also.
iPhone stops playing CDs, Bluetooth, while driving. Sometimes restarts itself, sometimes I have to reboot by pushing and holding the on-off button.
Have difficulty pairing with a second iPhone.

  • kristine ahladas Sep 30, 2018

Hi Everyone, so I’m interested if this is such a wide spread problem for years why do the dealerships look shocked when we bring it up? On Manager told me “oh…you need to video tape it because it’s not doing it right now” I said “oh…ok so video tape it while driving?” he says “yes unless you have a passenger in the car” LOL WTH?!
I had a wreck today because of it! I told them last week AGAIN that I’m going to end up having an accident because the system goes down then I have to hang up on my handheld (note the person I call can’t hear me on the handheld or bluetooth). Well I’m with my son today and needed to call someone but system was not connecting…I had to look down to hang up and I ran up on a curb and BOTH passenger wheels popped! Thank God I could pull off in a parking lot. I’ve run up on curbs before and my tires never blew. That’s a whole other issue but this crap needs to get fixed. It’s a safety issue and Toyota is ignoring it completely like they ignored the brake issue they had. I want my YUKON back. I had her for 10 years and not one problem with the screen or bluetooth. I thought the Japanese cars were good…forget it I don’t even want the car anymore. I think everyone needs to out them…

  • Robert Nov 5, 2018

I will chime in. My 3 week old 2018 4 Runner’s radio/nav/etc is locked up in the morning if it is below 50 degrees over night. Warm night runs fine in the morning.

  • Sam & Deb Nov 12, 2018

Our 2014 hylander , purchased new, has the same problem with freezing navigation system, unsafe, we have ask the declares in CA, where it was purchased , Indiana & Michigon for help they totally denied that the problem exists. We are fixing it with not purchasing the 2019 Hylander as it was planned.

  • DJ Nov 22, 2018

I own a 2014 highlander limited and every time my daughter sets up her phone to my car it causes the radio system to reboot while I’m driving. I took it to Doxon Toyota and one service guy went in and reset something with pushing a lot of buttons and the problem was solved until my daughter used my car again. I took it to Toyota in Olympia and the guy said I needed a new system. I’m going back to the one in Auburn and going to learn what he did to fix it.

  • Lori H Jan 16, 2019

Purchased 2015 Highlander Xle in dec. Had issues of no radio, no navigation, no phone on display. Call dealer and the brought it back, did a software update and also said 1)do not use aux port to charge phone2)clear all nav history after use3)having more than 1phone paired in car at same time can cause errors. That’s it. Mb they should have said that before we bought it.

  • Alison Feb 21, 2019

I have this problem too. Everyday. It’s awful. Reboot, crash, dropped calls. Who do we need to talk to for a fix, recall or something?!

  • Dan Apr 12, 2019

I have 2015 Highlander XLE with 40k miles. Ive had a problem with Entune freezing and rebooting since 16k miles. Seems to happen regularly every time I have system on for over 30 minutes. Taken it in to two dealers and both plead ignorance and claim first they’ve heard of it. They reset something and send me off but the problem returns. Out of warrant now and out of luck, I suppose. Very frustrating!

  • VIRGILIO May 7, 2019

I have “15 highlander LE plus and i have the same problem .Radio is not working at all ..Took it to the dealer and they told me i had to get a new Radio..not happy at all ,can’t wait for a RECALL

  • Freelander May 19, 2019

I have a 2017 Highlander XLE with under 20000 miles. Guess what? The FM and AM stations don’t work, but SiriusXM is fine. Everything else in the Entune system is working. This issue is 3 days old, any suggestions or quick fixes? I want my FM/AM back!

  • Ken Beasley May 21, 2019

Have a 2014 Highlander Limited Platinum. The nav would go black and freeze until you ‘re started the engine. SEVERAL times it froze in traffic;not helpful at all. Had the updates installed-nothing worked. Got a new ( rebuilt) nav, still crashed. Finally a tech at the dealership asked if we had emojis on our phone contacts. My grand daughter had put one on her name. Took it off and cured 95% of our problems.

  • Don Jul 1, 2019

Bought a 2014 Tacoma at end of April 2019, including the extended warranty. The first 2 weeks all was fine. Then I’ve experienced freezing and random rebooting. It seems completely random. Has Toyota owned up to it yet? Doubtful. Has anyone heard of any real fixes? BTW, the warranty doesn’t cover electronics. What a surprise !!!

  • Rebekah Aug 1, 2019

My 2017 Highlander with the JBL radio and entune, stopped working. It’s useless, at 52K miles it needs to be replaced, the quote 1850 at the Toyota dealer.

  • James Moses Aug 21, 2019

We purchased a 2018 Highlander XLE in August of last year. Last week I got into the car, started it, and the entire infotainment disappeared. We have no screen, no radio, no navigation, and no blue tooth! No response restarting the car, or trying to reboot the system. Dealer believes the radio died! Hard to believe that a new car with less than 12000 miles, crashes the entire infotainment system.

  • Vic Sep 26, 2019

I have a 2012 Toyota Prius and have used two different iPod devices in it over the last 7 years. Starting this week, if I have an iPod plugged into the car’s USB port and start the car, the console screen will come on, and then turn off, then come on again. Sometimes, it loops a few times before actually working. It always ends up working, but sometimes it needs more loops. If I have the iPod unplugged, then the car’s Entune system is completely fine. I haven’t updated the iPod in a while, so it isn’t that something changed with the iPod. And I did make sure the iPod has the newest update since this issue started.
