Entune Freezing and Crashing (Followup)

Last fall, I shared a couple of reader stories about problems with the Entune system freezing, crashing, and/or rebooting on its own. In the time since then, I’ve heard from many others with similar problems, but…

Until recently, I hadn’t experienced any such problems. Sadly, that’s changed. In the past month or two, the system has flat-out frozen a couple of times, and I’ve also experienced the occasional, and seemingly random, reboot. I’ll just be driving along and the screen will go blank and the system will reboot. Weird.

As for handling the freezes… You can reset the system by pressing and holding the power/volume knob for a few seconds until it powers down and reboots. From there, everything has worked okay, though I know a few people have said that they have to turn off and restart the car to get the Entune system working again.

Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to pin down a cause. It doesn’t seem to coincide with Bluetooth linking, phones calls (incoming or outgoing), SMS text messages, GPS navigation events, etc. Rather, it seems pretty random — which makes it nearly impossible to troubleshoot.

And yes, as far as I can tell, I’m running the latest version of the Entune software, and the problems didn’t just start happening after an upgrade. It just sorta came out of nowhere. Bummer.

Just came back from a trip and unfortunately I’ve been experiencing the same thing with my 2014 RAV 4 LE without EnTune just in the past few days. It will sometimes reboot while the backup cam is on after startup and you actually get this weird blue screen with a stylized watermark of the entertainment system panel and a loading bar which takes a good minute or two to load before finally booting into the UI. And then I noticed a couple times that parts of the UI like buttons would start to glitch and flicker on and off and I’d have to restart the car to get the thing to work again. Super frustrating when I have to go 20 minutes on the freeway in the middle of nowhere with no music till I can find a gas station to pull over and restart my car at.

There must be some kind of diagnostic/testing mode for these things or a way to update them via USB. Let me know if you hear anything.

    • Ray Feb 25, 2016

Exact same symptoms as Chris. 2015 Avalon. After starting the car (usually when cold) and backing out of the driveway. System will do a full reboot, usually while the backup camera is on, or just after the camera turns off.
In my case, it usually only happens once, after the initial startup for the day. So I didn’t know if it may be low voltage (after just cold starting), or something stupid like that.

Have a brand new 2016 Lighlander. Second day of ownership the entune screen when black and rebooted. Had to restart the radio. It happened several times over a few weeks. It included the navigation going out. The 1-800 Techical support person confirmed an issue with this system. Brought it into the dealer with case number and they reloaded software per Toyota Techincal support. The dealer felt it was an iPhone 6 issue so I took everything off my phone and disconnected Bluetooth. It became worse over the next few days. After conferring with technical support they will replace the head unit. Toyota acknowledged a problem on the entune system in other Toyotas. My neighbor has a 2015 Highlander with the same problem. I hope the head unit will solve the problem.

      • Al Jan 9, 2017

New head unit seems to have solved the problem. No rebooting and no more blackouts on the screen.

        • Brooke Feb 1, 2017

I am having issues getting them to acknowledge the issue. The dealership wants me to pay to update the unit, even though they have already “updated” it. I am trying to work with Toyota Customer Relations manager and get them to replace my head unit. Who did you talk to or call specifically? My Sequoia is a 2016 and I’ve had the issue since I brought it home.

          Thanks for the support! 🙂

I have a 2015 4runner with the head unit completely frozen on the reboot screen. Dealership wants $800 to replace the head unit and says that is the only fix (I was 12,000 miles outside of my warranty). Customer Service headquarters gave me excuse after excuse stating that because I didn’t purchase it as a certified from a dealer they won’t assist. Also because there is no history of brand loyalty. I asked how they expect to build brand loyalty if their head units are going out on a two year old car. Makes me want to sell it and never buy Toyota again.

I have the same issues with my 2015 Highlander. My car has been in the shop on and off for 4 years with a random reboot/crashing problem. Recently, it crashes daily and multiple times in one driving trip. Luckily I bought the 8 yr./100k mile warranty. Toyota has replaced my radio, tuner, and HD receiver. Problems still continued. Toyota corp. suggested for me to not hook my contacts or music up through car (only use bluetooth). That theory lasted 30 mins. Now, my car is back in the shop, with the while dash torn out. Now, they think it is an antenna. We’ll see! Hate my car! Want a new one! My car also eats brakes, tires, and rotors. Anyone have that issue?

        • bill Nov 5, 2019

did the rebooting ever come back with the new head unit? Thanks

        • bill Nov 5, 2019

has it rebooted since the new head unit? thanks

  • Chris Aug 20, 2015

Proud owner of a 2015 Highlander Ltd (Previously had 3 other a 2012; a 2010 and 2007). I subscribed to Entune and downloaded the App to my phone. From the beginning I have experienced Bluetooth connection Issues. Pairing was a dream as was transferring contacts, consistent connectivity however is a nightmare. In a 30 minute drive I get a disconnect and reconnect 20 times. I have been back to the garage and had latest Entune downloaded, I have checked my phone (a Samsung S6 … which worked perfectly on my 2012 Highlander)). The dealership maintain it is likely an Entune issue and incompatibility with my phone. Waiting still on an Entune update to catch-up. In the meantime … any ideas?

    • Marilyn Jun 22, 2016

They are being misleading because I have 15 Sequioa and it is doing all of the same issues that I am reading with Samsung S5’s connected. I mean how long will it take for Entune to “catch up!?” Smh

  • Art Sep 2, 2015

Hi guys. I own a 2014 Tacoma. I’ve had it for more a year and a half now. There were no radio problems at the beginning, but a few months after I bought it my Entune radio started freezing and or restarting fairly often. I use an Iphone 6, my wife a Samsung 6. I noticed it happens more often while the Bluetooth (BT) on either phone is paired with the radio. Most of the time I turn the other phones’s BT to avoid dual signals hitting the radio. I also noticed when the volume on my phone is full blast, it causes the radio to freeze more often. But ultimately, my radio just keeps freezing at random no matter what I do. There was an firmware update two weeks ago, I was hoping for better results, but I was not lucky enough. Last time I talk to the service department at Toyota, they were just trying to show me how to connect my phone to the radio 🙁
    Any luck on your side?

  • Lisa Sep 16, 2015

Owner of a 2014 Highlander XLE and also experiencing random reboots of audio/nav system. Have seen this several times over the last year and a half, but lately more often – probably ~3x this week so far. Just driving along on the highway and poof the screen goes black and the system reboots. Didn’t hit any bumps, wasn’t turning, etc. Was hoping it might be a loose wire/connection, but will be hard to debug w/o taking it in – and not being able to reproduce the issue. Read elsewhere to take it in to a dealer for an Entune software update. I may try this if it is free – am I dreaming?

  • Julio Oct 31, 2015

I have the 2014 xle model and I have the same issue. The toyota service and maintenance area do not have any idea of what is causing the issue. They want to change the entire radio unit. This problem is aggravating!

  • Cecil Trumbo Nov 17, 2015

Same problem here. 2014 XLE. RADIO/nav system shuts down and reboots for no apparent reason. Recently, on a 35 mile trip, it happened 4 times. Frustrating!!!

    • SherryAck Nov 21, 2019

I just purchased a 2014 Highlander XLE and have same issue just an hour after picking it up! It froze and we couldn’t do anything! We will be calling Toyota tomorrow!

  • Darryl Nov 21, 2015

2015 4runner, 3200 miles, screen just goes back and forth between the Toyota screen and the warning screen

    • April Jun 24, 2016

Was there a solution for you mine is doing the exact same? 2016 land cruiser

      • April Jun 24, 2016

That was a response to Daryl with the warning screen and logo alternating

        • fred May 8, 2017

have 2015 avalon hybrid just came up from florida. Navigation system continuously shut off then would take long time to reboot and did not retain the destination.
also radio would shut off. very anoying since this was a very expensive vehicle. did Toyota techs help and would the dealer repair for free?

    • Vicki Jan 23, 2018

      Just fixed my 2014 4runner:
      “Update Type – Operating System
Your Toyota Vehicle has an available multimedia software update (Version 0101D7 & 010157).

This update is designed to improve the performance of your multimedia system. Updates include the following:
      -Intermittent rebooting
      -Intermittent display freezing
      -“Low Fuel” pop-up message
Go to the following and input your Toyota model, year and if you have navigation or not:

      • Kathy Dec 5, 2019

Has anyone tried this?. Does it solve the problem?

  • Launi Nov 30, 2015

Happened to me 5 times this morning on a 20 minute commute. USB also not working. I have a 2015 Highlander Limited. I don’t have a lot of hope that my dealer will be able to fix let alone duplicate the problem

  • Emmett Mills Dec 1, 2015

I have experienced the same problems in my 2014 Sequoia. It becomes very frustrating on trips. The dealer has no explanation saying they have not heard about it. I do not know how that can be. It usually takes between3 and 5 minutes to reboot. It did not happen until I had to take my Sequoia in to have the computer updated.

  • Carl Davis Dec 1, 2015

I have a 2015 Avalon Limited with 8k miles. On a trip of 800 miles the system rebooted twice. In the process the radio came back on and on the same station but the navigation system lost the destination. This has happened several other times but I was not using the navigation system then. Very disturbing!

  • Eric Dec 11, 2015

I’m joining with the rest.. 2015 Highlander Limited and today the Entune system froze multiple times and kept re-booting. I’m bringing it back to the dealer but I don’t have high hopes that it will be fixed based on what the rest of you reported… Thanks to all of you for writing in.. I thought it was just me..

  • Justin Dec 16, 2015

Glad I found this forum as I too have been having recent issues with the Entune system in my 2014 XLE Highlander. I have had this car for 1.5 years and all of a sudden these issues just spontaneously arose. The system will just freeze up for around 5 minutes, then shut off and reboot. While frozen, I can’t turn the system off or do anything unless I pull the car over and turn the car off. If anyone has any idea on how to fix this issue, please post it.

  • Kim Dec 17, 2015

I have a 2015 Highlander XLE (purchased in September 2014), and today the entune system rebooted 4 times in a 15 minute drive. This is the first time it has happened.
That being said, I have been having the repeated BT crashing on my phone as mentioned by a poster above. I have a Galaxy S5, and I also cannot send or receive message through entune with my phone. My husband (also a Galaxy S5 user) can send/receive texts fine, has no BT crashes, and has no trouble with the entune system & BT in his 2015 Camry Hybrid XLE. And guess what? I can send/receive texts in his car with my phone.

  • Larry Dec 17, 2015

I’m in the same boat, have a 2015 limited. Had it for 6 months today for the first time on a 25 minute trip it cut off and rebooted 4 times.

  • Marcy Dec 28, 2015

I have the same problem with a 2014 Sequoia! Most aggravating. Problem has just arisen, I’ve had the vehicle for 2 years.

  • Rob Jan 2, 2016

I have a 2014 Highlander XL and have had the same issues. The RADIO/nav system shuts down and reboots for no apparent reason. I purchased my vehicle in Canada so it does not have the Entune capability so don’t think it is a issue with Entune. I have an appointment at my dealership this week.

    • Michael Parks Jun 22, 2018

So what was the verdict from your appointment?

  • Lan Jan 3, 2016

Same issue, i’ve noticed several times when starting my car (2015 AWD LTD) that I am asked to turn on the safety notifications (which I had turned off after purchasing over a year ago). Today, while driving my Entune/radio did a complete shut down and reboot (first time that’s happened).

  • Jim Jan 6, 2016

I have a 2015 xle sienna and the descriptions I am reading are identical to the other postings. Randomly the Head Unit (radio, NAV etc.) reboots and I loose my NAV directions and the music is interrupted. Dealer replaced unit but told me there is a secondary unit which RARELY has to be replaced. I now have to wait for a regional Toyota Tech to authorise replacement of the secondary unit.
Car has 7500 miles and it started happening at 2-3000 miles but is now unusable. Must carry my portable gps with me for backup.

    • bill Nov 5, 2019

      what was the outcome?

  • Paula Jan 6, 2016

We bought a 2016 Sequoia Platinum 2 weeks ago. My Entune radio has just shut off twice. The screen just goes blank, the music goes off, and then it reboots. I was not using Bluetooth, just the radio and the navigation. I have less than 400 miles on it. After reading comments here, it looks like it’s a common problem. Calling the Toyota dealership tomorrow!

    • Margaret Jan 26, 2018

What did you find out? I just bought a 2018 Hylander 2 weeks ago and my radio/display froze this morning when I started the car. Nothing I did worked to fix it until I turned off the car and then turned it back on. ??

  • Jay Jan 8, 2016

I purchased a new 2016 Highlander LE a week ago and exactly same freezing issue with entune audio. My iPhone is connected via Bluetooth and also I connected USB cable to listen to music from iPhone. Problem is touch screen and other audio system button aren’t working properly like a freeze. Freeze. But the voice commend is working thru bluetooth, but all other functions can’t be used such as radio, aux, and others. I tried to turned off audio system few times to fix but no luck.
Strange thing is that around 5~10 minutes later while driving, the Audio system touch screen function is working again like a normal. I am so frustrating with this problem. I will make appointment to go dealership.

  • Ross Jan 19, 2016

I have a Highlander hybrid 2013 model. The audio system has developed a mind of its own. The scan light will come on out of the blue and instead of the program I was on, I now get perpetual scrolling. Sometimes I can turn it off the scan mode, but mostly not. Sometimes I can’t even turn the radio off – it stays on. The screen is sometimes completely unresponsive, sometimes an item I press will come up after a delay, sometimes not at all. I see plenty of complaints in this forum, and I wonder if there have been any fixes offered by Toyota?

  • Ray Jan 21, 2016

I have a Tundra 2014 platinum. Call via Bluetooth disconnected randomly and itune(using iPhone) music play via cable(turning off Bluetooth in case) will freeze the system again randomly.
I commute with it for about 30min/day and it happens at least once per 2 days. Just off the call with Toyota and they want me to reset the Bluetooth connection. Remove phone list from the Entune and remove entune connection from my phone. Like restarting windows. 🙂 Not sure that this can be affected with the usb connection play with turning off Bluetooth… but that’s they think about it. I will try couple days and repost it here.

  • Laura Jan 26, 2016

I’ve read nothing but terrible reviews about Entune. Just picked up our 2016 Highlander Limited. Is there any reason to download Entune if I don’t plan on using any of their apps?

  • Kelly Feb 12, 2016

I have a 2015 Highlander and have been noticing this issue a lot since about early December. I’ve had the vehicle for a year in April. Today it froze and rebooted twice while on the way to work, both times taking more than 5 minutes from the start of the freeze to when it rebooted. On the way home from work (40 minute drive), it did this 4 times. It’s getting very aggravating. It is completely random so impossible to replicate. The dealer told me they’d have a hard time troubleshooting if it’s not actively happening when they are looking at it. Good to see I’m not the only one, but hopefully there is an update before too long that will fix the issue….. Sigh….

  • Larry Feb 18, 2016

Had the problems with system. Took my Highlander in for service and told them about problem. Result they are replacing complete system under warranty.

  • Eric Mar 8, 2016

2014 Highlander XLE here with the exact same problem. Toyota knows they have a problem. It’s really disappointing to see that they’re not interested in fixing it.

  • Robert Mar 9, 2016

Entune freezing on my 2015 Toyota Camry, I am on my third head unit due to freezing up and rebooting, Toyota acts like there is no problem only 8000 miles still acting up crazy.

  • Dawn Kincade Mar 12, 2016

I had a strange thing happen yesterday with my 2015 Toyota Highlander XLE. The weather in Nor-California has been crazy and I thought was that but the problem I experienced was that my entire navigation system went dark….including the little display where the odometers are. It did this several times in a two hour period and then the weather semi cleared and no trouble. I took it in today to Toyota and of course they didn’t find anything. Just trying to do my own research as they (Toyota) don’t do that. It has the latest software too. Anyone else experience this?

    • Jo Beck Sep 8, 2017

Dawn, my Highlander has recently begun to have this problem as well. Would love to say this is new for me, but this has been a recurrent problem for a few years now. I purchased a new 2015 Highlander Platinum in 2015. 2 months after purchase the navigation screen began to freeze up and reboot spontaneously while driving. Took it in for maintenance and was told I probably had ‘dust’ on the screen that made it turn off. Continued to happen over next several months. Then I was told to disconnect my phone completely and remove all contacts, and not use the available Phone feature on the vehicle. Did that and it didn’t correct the issue. Long story short: that vehicle had multiple software updates and a brand new complete navigation screen/system finally placed. Did not solve the issue. Became so frustrating that I traded for a brand new 2017 Highlander Platinum in December 2016, believing the problem was with my vehicle only. No such luck. One month off of the lot, my new Highlander is doing the same thing. 2-3 reboots per day, sometimes full screen staying black; other times only half of the screen is black. Phone disconnects frequently (iPhone 6 plus) and locks up calls in progress. Newest thing is that when the navigation screen goes black the screen above the steering wheel (at the odometer) goes black as well. Usually, the only fix is to restart. Sometimes I can touch the Home key and the screen comes back on. I had a Prius before my first Highlander and had no problems. Toyota is aware of this issue but seems very reluctant to admit there is a problem. As much as I like the features on my Highlander, this will be my last. When I trade it will be for something other than a Toyota.

  • Oscar Mar 20, 2016

The Entune system in my 2014 RAV4 completely crashed. I am out of warranty because I exceeded the 36K miles. I get a white loading line and a black screen. Now that I have this problem I googled about it and read that there have been updates for the system but the dealer would have to download it. No one ever notified me of these updates. Is it possible that because of not updating the system it crashed? Is Toyota or the dealership responsible for notifying the consumer about updates? I read about other Toyotas having similar Entune system crashes. Is there a larger problem with this system or did I get a lemon?

    • Adam Mar 25, 2016

Oscar, ours did the same thing and the dealership says 3200 to replace it, I would raise sand with them and complain that this is a known problem.

    • Linda Opatrny Jan 15, 2017

I have a 2014 RAV4 for 3 years now and no issues. But yesterday the screen went black and has the white line. And will not come back on at all. What do I do?

    • Amy Apr 1, 2019

Is there anyway we can do something to report all of our problems with the system and make Toyota do a recall? I have had the same issue for the 4 years I have owned mine and no one seems to know.

  • Bill Mar 24, 2016

I have a 2015 Tacoma and my Entune system will occasionally shut down and reboot. Going to try taking it in to the dealer and see what they say.

  • Adam Mar 25, 2016

We bought a 2014 RAV 4 new from the dealership, 23 months later the radio stopped working, it goes through what looks like a loading/rebooting screen repeatedly. The Bluetooth part where phone messages would come up stopped working 6-8 months after we bought it and the XM radio would go silent for 2-3 mins at the time. This past week it just stopped completely. We have 36,598 miles on it so it is outside the warranty. The dealership said $3200 to replace it. I will be filing a complaint with the BBB because this is just outrageous to replace a radio. The units are not but 300-400 dollars and he said 30-50 mins to put in. I really thought we were buying quality when we went Toyota, guess I was wrong.

  • Mike Mar 25, 2016

I had heard Entune was a nightmare, after reading all your posts my next new car will not be a Toyota. My criteria on infotainment systems is compatibility with Apple CarPlay, Toyota has it’s head in the sand and won’t support it. Epic Entune failures, plus no CarPlay support means no sale. There are many 2016 and announced 2017 models that will support it and don’t use Entune as an operating system. Way to fail your loyal customers Toyota.!!

  • Phylis Mar 28, 2016

I have a 2014 Highlander XLE and have had the same problem. I don’t use Entune but when I have my phone and another device connected as my Audio Player the system will freeze, then shut down and reboot. However I then have to reset the GPS and start and stop my audio book. I have also had it freeze when I back out of my garage this winter and then reboot. Nice to hear at least one dealer is willing to replace the system. Did it help?

  • Dawn Lamendola Apr 2, 2016

We have had the same issue with our 2014 Highlander. I’m over the 30,000 miles so I doubt they will do anything. I guess it’s time to trade it in. Super annoying to have your Navigation, radio and phone calls cut out on you.

  • Bruce Apr 7, 2016

I spoke to the service manager at the dealer today and they confirmed the availability of an update. I’m having that done tomorrow morning and I’ll report the results after observing for a few days.

  • Bruce Apr 8, 2016

On the hour long drive to the dealer today the system froze, crashed and rebooted 6 times. The last freeze up was when I pulled into the service greeting area so the greeter got to see the freeze and, right on cue, it rebooted. Another symptom of this problem is that phone calls cannot be placed. The directory works but when it tries to call out there is an error message.
As promised, they took the car to perform a software update that contained “bug fixes.” 45 minutes later I had the car back and began the 1 hour trip home. I’m happy to report that there were no freezes or reboots during the trip and the phone called out with no problem. Time will tell but so far it looks like a good fix.
On the receipt, under parts, it reads as follows:
    “12022 ? Intermittent radio rebooting EL1318 87-74 Software Update”
This was, of course, covered under warranty but I think they’d probably do it for free even if the car was beyond the warranty mileage since it not a wear and tear item.

    • Tim Oct 31, 2016

Is the fix still holding up – did it solve the issue?

  • Carol Apr 27, 2016

2014 Highlander XLE, 31,000 miles. Yep, it just started happening to me too. Within 25 miles, it blanked out, froze and rebooted 3 times. On the way home after about an hour for lunch, it didn’t happen once. I’ve hated that system ever since I bought the car. I have a Garmin GPS that I use almost exclusively. Now there’s one more reason to hate Toyota’s system. I just want to rip it out of the dash, but I would miss the rearview camera.

  • Greg Smith Apr 29, 2016

2014 Highlander Limited. Had Entyne reboot a few times first year, now much more often. Toyota dealer says “can’t see an issue”. VERY frustrating! Friends with similar Highlander and Sequoia having same issue.

  • Doug Apr 29, 2016

I have a 2013 Prius. My Entune issues started a couple of months ago with the freezing and the rebooting. It has all gotten much worse. The only things that work now are the FM radio and the car monitoring screen. Everything else is non-responsive or displays the message “system not installed.” I tried plugging in a usb drive with the Entune update downloaded from Toyota’s website, but the car didn’t even recognize the flash drive.

  • Lori May 3, 2016

Experienced same rebooting issues with entune system. I went to dealership and was given software update……we’ll see.

  • Keith Nelson May 4, 2016

10,000 mi. On a 2016 tundra and the screen is blank. CD player and back up camera work. Dealer here I come

  • Jeremy May 5, 2016

Just bought a 2016 toyota camry a month ago. Not even 100 miles was on it and the system rebooted while using the gps. Now, with just over 1000 miles, pandora locked up on the way home and the system rebooted. This is the 2nd crash. First toyota I’ve ever owned, and I’m already questioning the quality. I go to the dealer to get plates this weekend, will see if they have this update.

  • Scott Spivey May 20, 2016

Having same problem with my intune system locking up and having to reboot. 2014 Toyota 4 Runner!

  • Sandy May 25, 2016

Yes, I too have had problems with the Entune system freezing and rebooting in my 2014 Highlander. Just started about 2 months ago and now happening frequently. It is just random, on the phone, not on the phone, listening to the radio, not having the radio on, etc. Very frustrating!

  • Dennis Terribile May 26, 2016

2015 Avalon 14K miles – same issue. A few months ago it rebooted constantly during my 30 minute commute. Was great for several months until yesterday started again. First incident using Samsung Galaxy NOTE 3.
Recent one, Galaxy S7. If you are using bluetooth for phone, that disconnects as well since it’s using the audio from the system. If you are using Nav system, it’s gone as well. Dealer said to bring it in for diagnostics.

  • Shelly McConnell May 27, 2016

We drive a 2015 Highlander and we just experienced the same problem for the first time today. We have had our Highlander for just under a year and a half. Driving today the radio screen froze then rebooted. Once it came back on we couldn’t do anything on the screen not would the buttons on the steering column work. We called the service dept and they said it might need a software update. I guess we will see next week when we can get it in. Has this fixed anyone else’s issues?

    • Tim Oct 31, 2016

      Shelly –
I have the same car and problem. Did the update fix the issue?

  • Fran May 29, 2016

2014 Toyota Carolla LE 41,475 miles radio will not load dealer tells me not under warranty. I need to purchase new one. Needless to say I reported this to Toyot.

  • Dana Jun 2, 2016

2015 Toyota Highlander Limited. I’ve had the car for 1.5 years and the system continues to crash. Took it to the dealer today and they reset the system. After returning my keys to me, I turned on the car and nothing would come on – the radio, nav, nothing. They had another mechanic look at it and could not determine the issue. They will be replacing the entire system under warranty. About 5 minutes into my drive the system booted up and stayed on for the remainder of the 30 minute drive. I’m wondering if replacing the system will even fix the problem…

  • Jim H Jun 5, 2016

I have a 2015 Venza. My phone upgraded to android v 6.0.1 yesterday and the nightmare started. When BT connects the radio reboots over and over. Disconnect the BT and all is well. Everything was great until the upgrade. Don’t know whether to roll back the phone or take the car in for service.

  • David H Jun 5, 2016

I have a 2016 Highlander XLE. Less than 3000 miles. Was driving home from a trip to Arizona and the system out of the blue rebooted. I thought we went out of range or something but then it happened another 5 times. I’m truly disappointed in this system. Going to call the dealer in the morning and see what they say.

  • Amy Jun 6, 2016

I have a 2016 Highlander with 6000 miles on it. Having the same issue. Entune rebooted 4 times in a 20 minute drive this morning. Very frustrating.

  • Brandon Jun 10, 2016

I ahve hears if you are using a iPhone lightning cable in the usb slot that will cause the issue. The cable stores some data and since the usb is not meant for charging but only data transfer it will try to communicate with the cable. The radio will store these and errors and after ten to fifteen minutes will power cycle itself to try and solve the issue, and will continue to do so until the cable is removed. The cable can be used with the iPhone connected but not without.

  • Allen Jun 12, 2016

Did any of you have an issue with the blue hands-free phone voice quality

  • Allen Jun 12, 2016

Just a thought if you can video (or at least the passenger video the head unit failing , you can give this t o Toyota)

  • Jim H Jun 14, 2016

I found that if I turn off the “allow access to” items the phone will work with the radio. That’s about all though. I also can’t get the USB to connect.

  • Wendy Jun 15, 2016

Is it possible that this is an iPhone issue?

    • kelly Sep 12, 2016

Nope, I happens to me with my 2015 highlander platinum ltd and I don’t have an iphone.

  • Mark Jun 26, 2016

2014 Highlander. Freezes and reboots often. It sometimes does it on its own and sometimes we hold the button down for a few seconds. Disappointing.

  • Adrienne Jul 2, 2016

I have a 2015 highlander xle also and is experiencing freezing and rebooting also. I don’t have entune so I don’t think that’s the problem. I called the dealer up and they told me it’s going to cost 100.00 just to look at it. This really sucks when the car is still new and so many people are having the same problem.

  • Adrienne Jul 2, 2016

Also it always seem to happens when I’m on the phone. I have a Samsung note 5 phone..

  • Craig Jul 5, 2016

Same as all the comments above, we have a 2015 Highlander Platinum, AWD. The Entune system is rebooting on it’s own and resetting volume levels on the NAV system as well as causing the ECO indicator light to blank, when in ECO mode. We’ve had it back to the dealer 4 times now and all we get is the run around about having system updates applied, give us (dealer) all your cell phone data (iOS, service provider, model of phone…etc) and then got told next time it happens to video the occurrence. Un-Safe idea! especially since better half drives it solo most of the time. Found a blog that suggested calling the 800 number for Entune and complaining, the individual that posted their results, indicated that Entune authorized a replacement system for their vehicle with one that was rebuilt and passed burn in testing. Google the following for details: Tundra Entune problems: Here is your solution (just got a call from Toyota)

  • Karen Jul 21, 2016

I have a 2016 4-Runner same issue! Dealership is replacing the radio…will that work? Screen goes blank though everything does continue to keep working just can’t see anything on the screen. If I hit the home button, it all comes back! I seem to notice it too after using back up camera and also general maintenance messages/reminders. Don’t know if any of it is connected…but hope they can figure it out! I too use the blue tooth have a IPhone 6 Plus! Happening more frequently now sometimes several times during the day! I do also notice the call history is rebuting when the screen is blank. Ugh! Love my car except for this glitch!

  • Tom Jul 27, 2016

2014.5se Camry same problems with radio crashes when driving. Will not come back on until I shut car off.will not buy another Toyota with this system in it

  • Dru Trahan Aug 12, 2016

May be a coincidence, but it seems to happen more to me when its raining.

  • Rex Aug 15, 2016

I’m having the same rebooting issue with my 2015 Highlander Limited. Rebooted 4 times in less than 1 hour of driving the past 24 hours. Very frustrated. My software is up-to-date.

  • Cheryl Aug 25, 2016

We have a 2015 Toyota 4Runner SR 5. We don’t have smart phones and still experience all the same issues as mentioned about. Drove our daughter to college in Kansas, Entune rebooted several times. Or getting blank screen when driving. Have made Toyota dealer aware of issue each time we take the 4Runner in for oils changes. Today I was told they did a hard reset, call us if the problem comes up again. Politely told them I was not leaving till they come up with some sort of solution. Spend all this money for a vehicle only to experience problems.

  • Mike Aug 27, 2016

We have a 2015 Highlander XLT Limited. Had it for about 18 months. Love the vehicle. This past week we were in Fla. heat index over 110. Actual outside temp was 98. The screen/radio/USB rebooted first time ever while we were driving. Scared us since we were afraid it would affect the operation of the car. Rebooted 2 more times that very hot day and 1 more since then. Has not done it since we have been back home in OH. Heat and electronics do not mix well. Wonder if it could be heat related ? Car has 23,000 miles on it.

    • Joe Dec 5, 2016

I would say no, my 2014 Tundra just started doing it and it is in the 40s. Mine reboots at least three times shortly after a cold start, but then seems to stabilize. As luck would have it, it started this mess at 38,000 miles.

  • Arturo Aug 31, 2016

2014, Toyota Tacoma. Same issue. I’m wondering however if the people that have gotten their stereos replaced by the dealer (with a new Entune system/or refurbished one) are still having the same issues. Could some of you post an update?

  • Arthur Sep 5, 2016

I have a ’14 xle Highlander. I have the same problems and even had he dealership investgate under warranty and they said here wasn’t any problems with the head unit.
The issue seems to only happen when I have a cord plugged into and linked via the sub port under the dash.
This is a completely random occurrence but does haloed every time my phone (iPhone 6s) and or my iPod classic. I can’t say that it doesn’t happen during Bluetooth connect because when my phone is linked and plugged in via Bluetooth and usb it happens.
The stereo freezes and reboots itself several time during any trip and and length of time. I have actually had to shut the car off and restart it, in some instances, to get stereo back.
I did also have issues with the backup camera not even working, also completely random when I had no video from back up camera.
Makes me hate this expensive vehicle.

  • Brandie Sep 10, 2016

Hi everyone! I have a 2016 4Runner just purchased in May. My problem is whenever my phone is connected via BlueTooth, the EnTune system keeps power cycling. Over and over and over. It does not do it with my husbands phone at all. And it doesn’t happen every single day. Some days it happens and some days it does not. When it does happen, the entire system in the truck turns off and goes black. Then I get the Toyota logo then the warning/cautious driving message, followed by the home screen telling me my phone is connected, for about 5 seconds. Then the cycle begins again. This behavior stops as soon as I disconnect the BlueTooth on my phone…PLEASE HELP!

    • patd Sep 21, 2016

I have a 2015 Avalon that started doing exactly the same thing last night and this morning. Bringing it to dealer tomorrow morning. I will try removing Blue tooth devices for ride home to see if it stops but it still needs to be fixed. Rebooted about every 5 minutes on way to work.

    • Vydas May 19, 2017

Exact same problem with 2015 Highlander XLE. After various “fixes”, the dealer replaced the Head Unit with brand new, with the latest updates. Worked for 6 days, then back to constant reboot when phone is BT’d. Turn off BT on the phone, Head Unit reboots and works fine. At this point, there is no fix. Toyota believes this is a function of frequent cell phone software updates that they can’t keep up with.

  • Jim Sep 19, 2016

Same issue on my 2015 Tundra Crewmax 1794. This android phone worked just fine UNTIL I updated to android 6.0. Now just reboots anytime I connect with this device.

    • Joe Dec 5, 2016

My 2014 TC 1794 does it with iPhone 6S. About three times after cold start then less frequently after that.

  • nosumi Sep 23, 2016

This is a sample of poorly written software. My 4runner reboot has gotten much worse sing 9-2016 software update from Toyota. I thought it might have occurred more often with headlights on (for some reason) but just seems random altogether. Really annoying and some days seems to just loop. using iPhone 6s+ so newer bluetooth in device. easy to blame outside device instead of thoroughly QA’ing the software…come on Toyota fix this mess

  • Robert Dickens Sep 23, 2016

I have a 2016 Highlander and have had the multi function center shut down For seemingly no reason. However, I found if I checked the maintenance screen there is always one or more scheduled maintenance items illuminated. After I reset the items the system works great. The dealership says that should not cause the screen to shut down. I have tried to find a toggle for this function. No luck with finding a toggle. Hope this helps.

  • Tatt Oct 3, 2016

purchased 2016 Highlander LE Plus in April, entire system started going buggy right away, resetting, randomly changing XM radio stations (to mostly bad ones) freezing etc. Dealership kept telling me it was a software update issue. Finally after several visits and persistance
on my part, they looked it up and found a manufacture known defect and a bulletin had been issued about it, They replaced it free of charge, problem is now solved.

2016 RAV4 Limited Hybrid just did it this morning for the first time. 1500 miles and the display screen froze while it was on the Eco mode screen showing the electric motor usage, etc. Had to reset it.

  • Rick Oct 13, 2016

I have a 2014 Highlander Limited Platinum with 54,000 miles. I have experienced all of the NAV rebooting issues noted by others, including the gradual onset and steady worsening. Recently, the issue has become dangerous. Now, the dashboard console reboots as well and the cruise control turns off randomly. I took it in to the dealer who updated the NAVI software. The next day, more rebooting. Except this time, the NAVI rebooted, the console lights turned off and the worst part: the electronic power STEERING locked up for a tenth of second during a turn. Fortunately, I was able to control the car through the incident, but it’s terrifying. Immediately back to the dealer. The technician has experienced all the issues and they’ve been working on it for 4 days! We will be selling it as soon as possible as we’ve lost all faith in the car’s ongoing safety.

    • Rick Oct 17, 2016

After 7 days, the dealer finally diagnosed and fixed the problem. It was a bad alternator and a bad battery. The alternator was randomly dropping to 3 amps output, causing the various electronics to shut down and reboot. We fixed it and then promptly sold it. Once the steering went out on us, I couldn’t put my family back in that car.

  • Joe Oct 21, 2016

No problems for almost 2 years. Now l have problems with system lockup and rebooting.(2014 Highlander XLE) I have not changed phones or updated the entune app. One day it may happen 2-3 times in 30 min. Some days not at all. The dealer has no clue.

  • Bill T. Oct 22, 2016

I have a 2015 Highlander XLE. During my last trip, my Entune radio rebooted 5 times while I was driving and at times locked up and none of the touch screen controls worked. Happened 5 times in 7 hours of driving. I hope Toyota resolves this issue without giving me the runaround. I bought this Toyota over a Ford Explorer hoping for reliability. I might need to reevaluate Toyota quality. I’ll give them a chance to get it right.

  • FruGuru Oct 23, 2016

2014 Rav4 LE. ‘Entune’ freezes, lags and reboots randomly during the first two years and now recently getting worse. The voice recognition worked only for a few months since the ‘brand new’ car left the show room.

    • Gardy Nov 12, 2016

My 2014 rav4 would not powered on. Any cues?

  • Tom Oct 27, 2016

2016 4Runner SR5 – rebooted once over the past 6 months of ownership until today when it rebooted 8 times within a 20 minute drive. The only difference being that the temperature is now near freezing outside so the heater has been in use. I want my FJ Cruiser back, not because of the radio, but the various and sundry issues with this vehicle.

  • Miles Nov 16, 2016

According to Gray Daniels Toyota in Brandon, MS and Toyota Customer Care there is nothing wrong with the radios, its “outside influences”. The radio on my 2016 Highlander froze in high heat. I cracked the screen trying to get it to unfreeze or go to other app. Toyota would not stand behind it. I ripped out crap Panasonic and put in Blaupunkt for half the price and it works better combined with smart phone. I will never buy another Toyota product again.

  • Liam Nov 25, 2016

I have the same thing with my 2014 Prado GXL. An Animated pic of the system comes up with a white bar that loads then it goes black and does it again over and over. I have it booked in to the dealer to fix.

  • vlad Nov 28, 2016

    Toyota fix it now!!!!!!!

  • Scott Nov 29, 2016

2016 Tundra Platinum, System shut down and rebooted several times on a 120 mile drive during steady rain two months… has not happened since… until today once again driving during a steady heavy rain which has not been too often lately, My experience is definitely related to the rain for some reason… I Love my Truck…Major Bummer! 🙁

  • Frugality Nov 30, 2016

I’m experiencing the same issues in my 2016 sienna. I think is either a software or heat related issue. Hopefully a software update will eliminate these issues in the future. I will mention it to dealer at next visit. Seems like a wide spread problem.

  • Nicole Dec 1, 2016

Same issues with my 2025 Highlander Entune. Just a 30 minute drive into town and and it froze 5 times! Very frustrating. Has anyone figured out why this happening?

  • Zach Dec 5, 2016

Definitely seems to be related to the USB cord and/or the Bluetooth connection. Try working with those and see if you can get some stability.

  • Jay Dec 5, 2016

2014 Rav4 limited with nav entune crashed. My dealer told me they have to flash the software to fix it. All they did was charging me 75 bucks for nothing. Called toyota and they are willing to pay 50% of a cost to replace the unit. People, we need to keep calling toyota for them to have a recall on this issue. Never had a isssue with my lexus gs and other toyota vehicles before.

  • Morgan Dec 6, 2016

Hey guys! So I have a 2016 t4r that I got maybe one month ago. Two days ago I started to experience my system suddenly “restarting” while I was driving- like 4 times! I read up on some forms and saw that one guy said he had deleted his call history and phone messages from his cell- and he hasn’t had a problem in a year or so– he keeps it pretty clear and not let it build back up– well, I know it’s only been two days but it completely worked so far. I will try to update if anything happens. Thanks guys!

  • Gary Dec 12, 2016

Same issues with both a 2015 Toyota Tundra CrewMax and a 2015 Toyota 4Runner Limited (JBL Audio Systems in both). Both head units will stop navigation and music at various and unrepeatable intervals. Did not occur until after owning the vehicles for a year or so. This now occurs as often as not at all on a single trip to multiple times within a 30 minute interval. No rhyme, no reason.

It’s a disaster that Toyota produces these expensive vehicles and can’t get radio/navigation right. They should issue a recall on all radios for anyone having this problem and make it good for 10 years after date of first sale. No one should have to chase this problem the way we have to in order to try and get it resolved.

  • Steven Dec 14, 2016

Just had the shutdown and restart experience 2x in the last week. 2014.5 Camry Hybrid XLE with premium Entune.

  • Amy Dec 16, 2016

2015 Highlander XLE with the random crashing and rebooting which has been occurring for at least last 6 months. Over the road long hauls or short in town. Happened backing out of my garage yesterday and again today with the added bonus of a second reboot before I got it into drive. I found this forum (thanks!) and will try clearing my call log. But one piece of info I can pass along – to “recover” the system from the hang state you can press the power button for several seconds and it will force a reboot. similar to when your computer locks up.

  • Rich K Dec 16, 2016

2014 corolla premuim entune stuck in reboot. dealer says I need new head unit for $1100 plus tax. thats more than 4% of the total car cost of about 26K. high miles and out of warranty…

is there a way to flash the firmware, even to an older version, on my own? All download links I find are no longer active…

    • Kyle Dec 22, 2016

Did you find a solution to this? Same issue for me

  • Cecile I Dec 17, 2016

On 2015 Highlander my entune system is doing the same thing – hanging then rebooting. It seems to be pretty random but happens more often when using bluetooth with Iphone. Also, with GPS once it starts I am unable to turn it off or turn the volume down. All VERY annoying.

  • Kristin Dec 28, 2016

Mine is buggy and rebooting, beeping at me and changing screens when I haven’t touched it, locking up. I had it at the dealer today and they upgraded the software. It locked up on the drive home. Has anybody disconnected the GPS and just gone with something that does backup camera, radio and speaker phone? I could care less about any other options on it. I use Google Maps on my iPhone exclusively because of the traffic data and the fact that Entune can’t even find my house…

  • Babs Feb 10, 2017

This has been happening with my 2014 Highlander XLE since the first first few months I owned the car – brand-new. The situation has only gotten worse, with the screen totally freezing for several minutes before going black and rebooting. It happens at least 3 times now on a 3-hour trip. It was noted in my first visit back to the dealership for my 1st service appt., but because they couldn’t replicate, nothing was done. Does anyone have more current, 2016-2017 updates regarding Toyota’s willingness to replace the nav/audio head?

  • Trey Feb 13, 2017

2017 Prius doing the same thing. First head stopped completely, and just rebooted continually. Replaced the unit, and it rebooted several times on the way home. Is there any fix in sight?

  • tim Feb 13, 2017

We have 2014 Rav 4 Limited radio reboots continuously. Backup camera works fine. Dealer said radio is fried wants to replace. I have driven Toyota’s for 20 plus years never had problems without all the extra gadgets. Doesn’t sound like replacing head unit is a fix, HELP.

  • Tony Feb 15, 2017

I have a 2015 Tacoma Limited 4 door Crew Cab with 48k miles equipped with the miserable Entune. I am 2 days into a 3 day drive between Chicago and Tucson. My nav system regularly locks up and reboots. It has done it at least 20 times these past two days. Very frustrating. I’m going to call the dealer for a software upgrade appointment. A vehicle that was $38k out the door shouldn’t be doing this. I’m glad I popped for the extended warranty!!!

The good news is that to unfreeze the system just push the power button in on the volume control and hold it until a reboot is forced. This is just like power crashing a frozen laptop running Windows !!! You don’t have to shut down the vehicle.

Just don’t get me started on the clattering passenger bucket seat (when passenger-less) that Toyota says is “working as designed”. (I have packing foam between it and the console to absorb the inverted pendulum motion of the seat on bumpy pavement. Drove me crazy before I figured out how to silence that.)

Then there was also the properly inflated, 32k miles with plenty of tread remaining, Bridgestone tire on the front right that blew out and nearly killed me on the freeway @75mph. The blowout was on the inside sidewall due to a manufacturing defect, and NOT anything I did wrong. I have Michelin Defenders on the truck now.

I doubt I’ll ever buy an expensive Toyota with this much gingerbread on it ever again. Subaru here I come !!!!

  • Kristin Mar 7, 2017

Update on mine. Toyota tried to fix it three times with resets and updates, then replaced the unit. It was fine for about 3-weeks and now it is back to beeping, freezing and rebooting. From all the troubleshooting it appears that it is fine until a phone is connected via bluetooth, but once it has been connected, disconnecting it does not erase the data. The bug will persist… I’m going back in tomorrow, but so far, unless I want to never connect a bluetooth device, it seems doomed from the start…

  • Roger Geyer Mar 13, 2017

I seem to be having similar problems on my just under 2 month old 2017 Toyota Camry.

So far (I need to do more testing to try to confirm / narrow down):

It hasn’t rebooted, but it does freeze up sometimes. Sometimes it unfreezes briefly or for awhile on it’s own. It always is fine if I turn off and restart the car, as others have reported.

I mostly drive in town as this is my daily driver.

The unique things I’ve noticed when this happens (which I don’t know if are the cause yet):

1). Driving at interstate (70+ mph) for awhile. (Hotter under the hood?)

2). Using a Garmin GPS unit plugged into the accessory power in the console.

I always have a memory stick plugged into the USB port and am listening to that, to avoid the radio/commercials. Don’t know if related, but USB issues were mentioned in some above posts, so just in case.

I’ll see if I can narrow this down and report if I can reliably reproduce with narrow inputs. Thus far, the response and lack of fixes from Toyota is disappointing, per the posts above.

Wanted to wait until I knew more before calling the dealer, as figured this might be the case, especially if I couldn’t reliably reproduce. Glitchy electronics like this seem to be the most common problem with newer cars. Hopefully this doesn’t spread to other stuff, since computers/software are all through modern cars.

  • Ray Grant Mar 28, 2017

My crashed in my 2014 Rav4. The dealer said they couldn’t fix it. It costs $1,400 to replace. They took my old radio and sent it to coorperate. They fix the problem and resell it. So it can be fixed. I contacted the FTC (Federal Trade Commission) apparent Toyota is allegely running a “Loop” scam. Call this number and file a complaint 1-877-382-4357. Then they instruct you to contact your State’s Attorney General, which I am doing now. The more that call, the faster this will be resolved.

  • ellen longo Mar 29, 2017

Here’s what it is: audio software update needed. Dealership did that for me while in for an oil change. It cost me $35 because the audio system warranted for only 36 K miles. And I had 44K.
Not too bad an expense…has corrected the problem, so far so good.

  • T Mar 31, 2017

Same here. I have a 2015 4Runner. System randomly freezes for a few minutes then reboots. Very frustrating.

  • David Apr 22, 2017

I have a 2015 Highlander Limited and yes my Entune receiver crashes A LOT. It seems to crash more when using the Bluetooth connectivity (I have an iPhone), but also seems to go through phases where it crashes and reboots at random. I am hoping a software update will fix the problem for the short-term, but I’m thinking of upgrading the head unit anyways, as I don’t like some of the application “safety” lockouts in Entune.

So it feels like there are perhaps two separate problems with the base Entune software – a software driver problem with the Bluetooth stack and perhaps some other type of memory leak with another application that runs in the background or the OS itself.

  • Mark Watkins Apr 23, 2017

I have 2014 4Runner JBL Entune also freezing up, black screen, reboot. I ran it by service advisor and he told me it was a storage issue with unit. Like a mobile phone responding slowly when storage is full. He suggested go into APPS/Setup/General. Hit up arrow. Select “Delete Personal Data”.

Keep in mind you’re going to lose stored addresses and your custom picture, but since doing this I haven’t frozen.

When you reconnect phone you need to keep your contacts from uploading. It’s tricky to stop auto transfer of contacts but I was able to do it. On iPhone under Bluetooth 4Runner you can disable auto sync. But there’s also an enable /disable auto sync on jbl system.

My unit has not frozen since and it was doing it 3 times a day

Now it’s kind of sad that there isn’t enough storage to handle 200 contacts, a picture and maybe 50 saved destinations, but I didn’t rely on contacts to heavily.

    Good luck

    • David Burkhart Jun 4, 2017

Tried the delete data trick. Froze within five minutes. I suspect hardware issue is the cause, like cheap capacitors or faulty alternator (as suggested earlier). Either way, Toyota refuses to accept responsibility – so noted for posterity.

  • Satah May 23, 2017

I have a 2014 4Runner and I am experiencing the same problem. I have not had a radio for a week nothing works the system is constantly rebooting. Nothing seems to correct the problem

  • Joanie Jun 4, 2017

Hi Guys… thanks for this forum. I too have a 2015 Highlander Limited with entune. Driving down the road, the system just crashes, then reboots….system off then turns on, then it happens again in a few minutes. I don’t know what is triggering it. All I have is my iPhone 7 hooked up by blue tooth This is happening to too many of us and they need to find a solution!!!!!
thanks for this forum! If anyone knows how to fix it, let me know! thank you!

  • Betty Jun 19, 2017

Same problem – consently crashes, reboots, freezes. I have a 2014 Highland Limited. Has anyone had Toyota actually fix theirs?

  • Les Kostolanci Jun 20, 2017

Having the same issue with my 2014 4Runner Limited. Riding down the highway using the Navigation system and suddenly it shuts down and does a reboot. And of course the navigation destination is lost, so I need to pull over and re-enter the destination information. I’ll never buy a Toyota again.

  • Sam Moler Jun 20, 2017

I bought a new Highlander from Fast Eddy in Wichita Kansas and will never ever own another Toyota and will never ever buy from fast eddy either. The Gps system has gotten us lost on several occasions and is absolutely awful to operate. So long to Toyota. We had a 2015 Avalon before this and was reasonably satisfied but never again.

  • Tom J Bontrager Jun 23, 2017

have a 2015 Avalon Hybird Limited. The Entune system crashes at random. If we all write to Toyota Corp office, surely they will find a fix. If not then we need to write or e mail to our State Atty office. This is crazy as Toyota does not want to lose sales as they surely will if a recall and fix is not implemented soon. TJB

  • David Jul 4, 2017

I see all the comments related to the entune system crashing but nothing about resolving these issues.

  • Larry Jul 6, 2017

We are having many of the same problems, as well as the navigation voice stopping mid sentence and routinely states “I didn’t get that”, rendering our unit useless!!
Where do we go to get the ball rolling for a recall. This is a DISASTER!! 🙂

Thank you so much for this link. I literally just bought a used 2017 Highlander on Weds 11.29.2017. The infotainment worked when I test drove the vehicle (of course!). But once I purchased it, I hopped in the car, started it up and……NO RADIO. I called the salesman, he came and tried to get it working too. Finally after trying everything, it came on. FIVE minutes on my way home, it flashed a few times, then re-booted only not to work!!! The dealership was actually closing when I purchased it, so I couldn’t go back and complain. The next morning I had surgery, so again, I couldn’t go and complain. Friday I called and took it in. They said that an “update” is due to come out in a couple of weeks and for me to come back at that time. Sooo frustrating! Well here I thought it was just the radio (which, I CAN NOT LIVE WITHOUT MY RADIO!!), it actually is the radio, the sound to my navigation, hands free phone use, and the “say a command” feature doesn’t work because it doesn’t hear me, nor can I hear it. This is sooo beyond acceptable to pay for features and have them pretend as if it’s a non-existing, non-ongoing issue!!!! After doing a car fax, I found that the radio had been replaced by the previous owner in Sept 2017. This is all so infuriating to me!!

Same issue – 2014 RAV4 – Navigation/Radio – will not turn on. Doesn’t matter if I shut if off and restart. It will try to cycle through, but then the screen just goes black.

  • kay Jul 27, 2017

I have a 4 runner while driving alone my radio will reboot or turn off and my navigation will stop. It is a bummer when you are trying to find a location. Normally it does not happen unless I have been driving a while. The Toyota place said I needed to up grade my navigation but after reading sounds like an issue that can not be resolved. Bummer I may need to go back to a Ford.

  • Ruben Jul 29, 2017

I have a 2014 Highlander Limited and my system would freeze a few times during a 20 minute drive. Contacted the dealer a few times and they said there was no software update.

I found a thread in another forum where a user joined the Toyota Technical Information System for $55 for a 2-Day pass and was able to download an update. I figured I’d give it a shot. I did it a couple of weeks ago and the system has yet to lock up even once.

    The service bulletin is: T-SB-0035-16

You can find more info here:

2016 Highlander XLE. I don’t know what Entune is, but my navigation screen is frozen. This happened on a recent trip back from Alabama to Wisconsin. It put us in the worse part of Chicago in the dark. Not very happy with this. Took it in yesterday for our one year service and was told that they are going to replace the entire unit. I bought a Toyota for the famed quality, but after reading this page I am very concerned.

  • Rhona Earl Aug 3, 2017

I have a 2014 4Runner and mine has done this 3 times in the last 2 months. Totally random – absolutely no response when it freezes. Had to shut engine off and restart to get it to come back. After a random reboot, I also noticed that my directional arrow had reset from “always North” to it pointing in the direction I was driving.

  • Dawn Aug 4, 2017

I own an Inferno 2015 TRD Pro Crew Cab, bought it brand new on 12/21/14 and have experienced only little problems until about two months ago. The first time the navigation/audio/blue tooth system froze up and rebooted, was such a strange and isolated incident that I totally forgot about it, but yesterday I had it happen again and then today it started happening every 15 – 20 minutes and occurred 6 times! Talk about frustrating. I have tried turning off the unit, as described by one person’s comments, but the system didn’t respond. It will reboot itself, but has to stay frozen and unusable for about 7-10 minutes, or I have to pull over and turn the engine off and turn it back on.

Since I am in sales, I spend a lot of time behind the wheel of my truck and depend on the bluetooth system for talking on the phone, verbal texting while driving, etc. and when the system locks up it drops my calls, resets my navigation settings (including destinations for which I am currently in route) and just causes all sorts of issues that I cannot resolve safely while driving.

I am going to call tomorrow and set a service appointment for next week so that my husband can go with me, after reading some of these comments I have a feeling that they would try and convince a mere woman that it is either something that is not covered under my warranty/extended warranty and insist that I have to pay additional money in order to fix the problem. The truck only has 32,000 miles and some change. I am going to print these comments and take them with me as well, and if necessary also address with Toyota on a higher level.

This is the first time that I have owned a vehicle that I am still excited to jump behind the wheel and drive, just as I did when I test drove “Big Orange/Blaze of Glory/The Pumpkinator”. I don’t want to trade her in, and have decided that I will keep her even when ready to purchase another vehicle, I love her that much! But I may not have a choice if they can’t or aren’t willing to fix this issue and it does interfere with my ability to perform my job while behind the wheel,

I just called the 1-800 number and they advised me to take it to the dealer. However, the service rep. said they did not have a critical mass of complaints (my terminology) to create a recall/customer assistance program for reimbursement. I would suggest anyone who has this issue (whether the dealer has fixed it for free or not) call 1-800-331-4331and start creating that critical mass! I’m going to the dealership next weekend but with 38,000 miles, I suspect I’ll be paying for the repair/update. Good luck!

I wonder why this issue hasn’t been on any of the “car review/rating” sites. This definitely would of had me looking into another brand of vehicle. And for me to say this means a lot as I am a previous longtime owner of a Toyota RAV4 (which gave me ABSOLUTELY NO ISSUES for all the years I owned it). I had wanted a Highlander for years at this point before finally having the means to buy one last week. It has been nothing but a nightmare with the entire infotainment center (as long as it doesn’t require audio or sound, which you need for navigation, hands-free phone use, saying commands and the radio). Sooo beyond disappointing! My dream car and a highly reputable company let me down.

  • Marc Aug 18, 2017

I have a 6-month old 2017 Toyota Land Cruiser with the same issue: Audio/Nav system has frozen twice over the past two days (buttons and switches completely non-responsive), then spontaneously rebooted. Last thing I want to do is to have to convince the dealer’s service department that 1). my vehicle has this problem, 2). I am not the only one to have ever experienced this issue, and 3). they need to fix it. Every single time I speak with my “service advisor” it’s a battle to get them to acknowledge/do anything.

  • Joy Sheikh Aug 19, 2017

Just purchased a used 2015 Highlander Hybrid Limited Platinum with 35k miles yesterday. Screen started rebooting and freezing first day we owned it. Today is the second day of ownership and it’s had to randomly reboot several times. My stomach is in knots about this. The Chevy MyLink system drove me nuts (radio has to be on to use nav, etc.) so I decided to go with a Toyota this time. It was an expensive purchase for us and is very disheartening to read this thread. Please let us all know of any fixes. Toyota, please fix this!

  • Art Christopher Aug 28, 2017

This my 3rd 4Runner.2015. I’ve had no problem with any of them till about three months ago when the freezing and rebooting started. Took me an hour out of my this weekend and then start locking up consistently until we got out of the woods and back into more populated areas. CalledToyota today and had me update the audio section. Will see if that works, but I’m thinking it won’t after reading these posts.

  • Nathan Stooke Sep 24, 2017

Same issue. Dealer says it is a phone problem, but it will freeze even when Phone is not connected. Based on the long list of people posting it sure seems like a real problem and one Toyota should fix.

  • Mike Oct 20, 2017

Same issue. I have a 2015 Highlander Hybrid. This started out as an occasional nuisance. Now it happens multiple times on nearly every trip. It’s more than a nuisance when your Nav system freezes. Taking it to the dealer next week, but I’m not confident they will have a fix. Toyota, are you listening?

  • Mike Oct 20, 2017

Update: Thanks to Paula for providing the 800 number. If you call while you’re in your vehicle they will walk you through how to check the firmware for your Entune system. Toyota is aware of this issue and they have a firmware fix. Unfortunately, Toyota is not yet doing over the air (OTA) firmware updates so you’ll need to take your vehicle to a dealer for the upgrade. As a side note, I learned that dealers don’t automatically update firmware during scheduled maintenance. I have a 2015 Highlander and my firmware is 6 releases behind. Toyota did say dealers will update if you ask. I hope this helps.

  • Stanley Mattos Nov 10, 2017

I called Toyota Customer Support at 1-800-331-4331. The Representative sent me a link to a Toyota Entune update via email. Note that you must install the update on a USB 2.0 Flash Drive. USB 3.0 drives will not work. When you call Toyota have your vehicle’s VIN handy.

  • Stanley Mattos Nov 11, 2017

Update: I successfully installed the Entune update (which was dated March 2017). The update’s release notes indicated that it addresses intermittent random reboots of the system. The system, post update, has not randomly rebooted.

  • Donna Caldwell Nov 28, 2017

My 2015 Toyota Highlander is also freezing up and sometimes several times in a row. I have just been dealing with it but I think now after reading so many others are having the same issue I am going to take it in to the dealership I purchased it from. Any chance they will do a recall on this issue? I am out of warranty.

After doing a car fax, I found that the radio had been replaced by the previous owner in Sept 2017. NONE of this information was disclosed to me. I traded in my all-around great running 2016 Acura for this. They screwed me big time! I’m going to try to return this vehicle altogether and go with a COMPLETELY different brand! Which is very disappointing because I had a RAV4 for many years and LOVED my little SUV. I only bought the Acura because it had all the luxuries of the Highlander but was the size of my RAV4. The only thing, was the cargo area was too small, which is how I ended up at Toyota.

This is all so infuriating to me!!

  • Wendy D Chicoria Dec 29, 2017

I have a 2014 Corolla LE and on 12/9/17 the radio froze but continued to play and I noticed no other issues. The following day, the entire Entune system crashed- it starts and stops and gives the blue screen with a loading bar until it completely shuts off and the screen goes black. So like everyone else, I have no radio, no navigation, no bluetooth/text options, and no smart vehicle functionality as I’d paid for. I thought it was due to a low car battery but since coming across this site I am less hopeful. I have a Samsung phone. Since this started, the usb cord I have plugged in doesn’t power up my phone anymore. Not sure if it’s related or not. Car has almost 78k on it and was out of warranty when I purchased it. Has anyone had any luck with any fixes? Going to the dealer for a system update or whatnot??

  • Jim Jan 30, 2018

Wife’s 2015 highlander screen just went totally white and won’t reset.

  • Shannon Feb 12, 2018

I have a 2014 Tacoma. I listen mostly to music from my iPhone thru Bluetooth. My stsytem has locked up a few times over the years, but always reset with no issue.
Driving home tonight my radio made slight popping noise, then the screen went white. No button pushing or holding down had any effect. When I got home I turned off the vehicle, then restarted. The screen was still white, but this time when I turned off the ignition the screen would not turn off. Eventually I had to disconnect my battery. I am not a happy camper right now.

    • Mark Apr 15, 2018

I had the same thing happen to my 2017 Tacoma Off Road yesterday as Shannon. Turned it on and a white screen was all I saw. No button pushing or such would fix it. Disconnected the battery for an hour or so to see if that would address the situation and the problem returned once the battery was reconnected. And in similar fashion, the screen remained white when I turned off the vehicle and removed the key. I finally removed the fuse instead of disconnecting the battery, much easier, and I’m waiting for Monday morning so I can call the dealer to check into a repair. 47,000 on the vehicle, but fortunately I purchased the extended warranty when I bought the vehicle used 1.5 years ago.

Anyone else experience this problem and arrive at a solution/explanation?

    • Ken Apr 17, 2018

I’m facing the same white screen & not turning off issue with a 2014 Tacoma.
Did anyone ever find a do it yourself fix for this?
Dealer’s shop claims the entire unit needs to be replaced for $1,000.

  • James B Xiong Feb 22, 2018

My new 2017 tundra has the same issue. It will randomly shut down and reboot plus freeze from time to time. I take it in at 5K after 3 month of driving. They replace a refurbished one but the problem still there. I took in for many trip, they done everything they can think of and after all they tell me to live with it. They will not keep on replace a head unit and do anything with it. Al I can do is waiting for a new software update…. who know when…I have to seek lemon now.

I have a 2013 Avalon Hybrid and my entire entire system began failing after taking my car in for its regular service – oil change, filters, etc. took it home and the next morning the map function would not work. Took it back to the same deal I purchased the vehicle from and have had serviced, and they said I needed to replace the head unit at $1031. ( the car has 50,200 miles on it). Of course they have to order it. Took the car home, and as i drove off the car now no longer has any functions from the entire system. In addition, the automatic locks, heating, airconditioning, and other functions do not work. The car basically, each time I start it, something else crashes. I was about to buy a replacement car for my Honda hybrid, a 2018 Camry Hydrid. Not anymore. I have been in touch with Toyota Care. My guess, from reading everything above, I will not receive any satisfaction. Help!

New 2017 RAV4 Nav screen would freeze, but when displayed with Audio and Eco, both would go blank when the Nav display froze. Only the display froze (and freezes); audio continues, navigation prompts continue and are correct, and the driver’s Eco display works. Once, it rebooted spontaneously. Called Toyota and updated all apps (there was no OS update), and the problem remained. When I called again, I was referred to my dealer. It happened on the way for my 5K service, so I could show them. They replaced the head unit, but the problem remains with another variation: Audio and Eco don’t always go blank, and then the screen responds normally, except for the Nav part. I’m keeping careful records now. So far it has only happened when I’m navigating.

Based on what I know about computers, the symptoms suggest inferior hardware in the video driver or a bug in the driver software, but a software bug would cause everyone to have the problem. Are there people out there who don’t have the problem?

    • Kent Mar 17, 2018

…sorry… when I say “in the video driver”, I mean “hardware driving the video display”.

  • tom Mar 19, 2018

Same issues….2015 highlander limited. 2 months out of warranty. an update fixed the first problem a year ago and now it’s a brick. it just keeps rebooting to main Toyota screen then crashes and reboots in an endless cycle. Funny that the Baierl toyota dealer just tried to sell me a new unit for $1000 installed but likely the problem will just continue to exist. At a loss!

  • Janis S Mar 25, 2018

I have a 2015 Toyota 4 Runner about every 6 months my radio/navigation screen goes black/blanks out. Sometime it is the whole screen or 1/2 the screen and it happens at anytime. Toyota continues to tell me “well it just needs a update”. Well great my 4 Runner is still under warranty but what happens when it’s not under warranty, what will the cost be to download new software every 6 months ? Has any legal action begun against Toyota for this situation?

    • Joi A. Sep 7, 2018

Good question Janis. I think we all should file a class action lawsuit against Toyota! I’ve read up on most of the post and I’m beyond frustrated and upset . I have a 2016 Prius 4 and I’ve had a problem with this car from day one. I’ve gotten nothing but a run around from Toyota. They talk to me “all brand new” like I’m the first one telling them about this problem. For months now they’ve been putting me off. They claim they updated the system, which if they did, it still doesn’t work.

So after getting shafted and put off each time and being asked to leave my car for the day, which means I’d have to rent another car once again, I decided to go to a Google and see how many others are experiencing the same problem. Well I found this chat and I’m not surprised. Toyota is fully aware of their poor product and their sticking their heads in the sand playing dumb to it all; hoping we’ll let the warranty run out.

I’ve been a diehard Toyota buyer for over 30 years and I’ve NEVER had a problem like this or treated so insolently. Toyota is not what the used to be. This will be my last Toyota and I will tell everyone I know to run as fast as they can from buying one.

Again, I think a class action lawsuit is what should be done.

  • Genio Cinelli Apr 8, 2018

2015 Toyota Highlander Same issue. Waiting for legal action, going back to dealer is a waste of more money and time I don’t have.

Have a 2017 Camry and finally got to go on a long road trip. Stereo and Nav system locked up 5 times while traveling. Finally quit using the Nav and went back to my Tom Tom. Still locked up after that, will come on again after about 10 mins. Dealer said the software in the stereo cannot keep up with the phone updates! Toyota had a major problem on their hands and needs to find a fix very soon! Will get a signed statement before warranty runs out for the life of the car!!

  • Leonard Clark Apr 26, 2018

My 2015 Avalon Hybrid XLE Premium experiences same problems with Navigation and Radio freezing , then it shuts down, reboots and the Navigation destination is list and the Voice Volume on Navigation defaults to factory setting instead of the lower volume that I set in General Setup functions.
Today, 4/26/2018 on a 46 mile trip this entire episode of “freeze, re-boot, loose destination, volume default” happened 7 times in a one hour trip. Very upsetting . Car is still barely within factory warranty so I will be interested to see what Toyota does.

  • Jeff Post May 21, 2018

I had the same issue the article talked about. A 2015 Toyota Highlander where the screen would freeze. If you waited long enough the head unit would restart itself or you could reset it by holding down the power button. Had to go twice to the dealer. First time the dealer confirmed the radio was at the latest firmware. The second time I brought a video I was able to take of the screen freezing and then rebooting.
I was still under the 3 year\36000 mile warranty so the dealer replaced the head unit. The problem went away after that.

  • Tracy May 29, 2018

My 2014 sequoia has been shutting down for a long time. Today it did it 5 times with a half hour drive. I had my daughter record it I have talked to toyota but they state it doesn’t do it when we take it in. We can’t get it to change until it decides to. Holding down volume does not work.

  • John B Jun 8, 2018

    2015 Highlander XLE here.
I bought my Toyota used in the summer of 2017 and the Etunes head unit froze on the drive home from the dealer.
I am an electronics engineer so I figured I would track down the problem. I updated firmware — no change. The problem frequency varied with as it would go for weeks with out freezing. However, in late April it was rebooting multiple times on my twenty minute drive into work. One day it rebooted before I put my vehicle in reverse. I banged the dash (checking for intermittent connection of course) — no effect. I then banged the screen with my palm (not very hard mind you) and the touch screen cracked.
Just as well as that forced me to upgrade to a aftermarket (Kenwood DMX7704S) double din unit. I spent over $600 and installed it myself but worth it. It has more features and better sound. Etunes not worth the repair cost.
Reply if you want more details about my upgrade.

  • James Jun 13, 2018

Any chance of a class action lawsuits? My 2014 Tacoma is out of warranty. I have the 1010d7 update. Did not help if anything worse. It continuesly reboots

  • Andrew engelman Jul 15, 2018

went to toyota, they couldnt fix with upgrades sent to them and they decided a needed a new radio which they are ordering. My entune closed down and rebooted all day long. today ten days later it works out of the blue and continues to work so I have to decide if to put in new radio when it arrives. I am all under warranty, but it shows mechanics dont really understand entune and what cause it to not cooperate

  • Richard Harrelson Aug 1, 2018

I have a 2015 Toyota Highlander LE and the display will not come on. There is only the Toyota emblem on the display. Nothing works when I push the apps, radio, home, etc buttons. I took it to a mechanic I use for minor issues and his computer said it was an UO163 problem. He suggested I take it to the dealer and have them hook it to their computer. He said the radio, navigation, home, etc computer is not responding to the main computer and they can reset it. The service dept individual saw the Toyota emblem on the display and said the computer is locked up and I need a new black box or whatever that runs all the display which will cost $740 plus labor. My question to anyone who can give me advice is, are they being honest with me. I only have 35,000 miles on the car. Thank you, Dick

  • Franklin Aug 30, 2018

    2017 Camry XLE 17,000 miles
(purchased after my 2004 died with 298,503 miles on it – the 2017 won’t make it that far, and will be the last Toyota, if Entune continues to act up).

FYI: Take a picture using a Smart Phone of Entune Screen each time it goes down. This will log the date and time of the crash. Show the Maintenance Manager the pictures of each time the unit crashed. Albeit mine is under warranty they are replacing based on my photo’s since unit popped back to life 20 minutes from the Dealership.

Everyone…this is not ok. This is a safety issue. Bluetooth and navigation is a must! I had an accident yesterday and I’ve been warning them that I’m worried about safety. I’m trying to get them to pay for damages. If they don’t I’ll have no choice but to go to the news. I’m shocked people are dealing with this. It’s 2018 Toyota! Not having a good reliable Bluetooth and interface is not ok. We paid for a car that works!

  • Jamie Dec 7, 2018

2015 DCSB Tacoma and I too have had issues with the Entune system.. At first I thought it was related to cold, or to bluetooth, but I’ve tested out those theories. As others have noted it’ll be fine for a while, then within one or two weeks it may crash a couple of times, then be fine. Definitely cannot store useful dates like oil changes etc with the system behaving as it does.

  • Don Dec 9, 2018

I have a 2015 Highlander limited AWD. Same experience, with Entune freezing and rebooting continuously. Started happening on long trips, would reboot itself frequently. Took to dealer at 30k miles, and they updated software, which helped for awhile. At 49k miles, system has now frozen up completely, continuous rebooting, and dealer says they can not fix. Need to replace at cost of $1000…ridiculous. They offered to pay half of replacement cost. They replace with a “refurbished” unit from Toyota. Toyota clearly has a product performance problem that they have been unable to address.
Really like the vehicle, but this is an ongoing issue that will make me never buy another Toyota…too bad!

  • Andrew Vannata Jan 8, 2019

I seem to have noticed that this happens mostly when I am charging my phone while using the radio, and I hit a little bump/pothole that jostles the car. I don’t know if this causes a power surge or what. Yes I am often using Bluetooth running Pandora, but I think it’s an electrical issue, not a software one, as if I’m streaming the phone, I’ll usually have it charging as well.

My 2013 Avalon bluetooth (entune) has quit working. Phone will not connect. Dealership says something is wrong with system and I need a new unit for the tune of $8000. Uh, don’t think so.

I am experiencing the same issues! I bought a 2015 Toyota SR5 about 6 months ago and initially, it was fine. A few months ago, the radio/navigation randomly froze up and the rebooted. It started out that it just happened here and there. Now it’s happening 6 times in a half hour drive! Completely unacceptable!! It’s happening more and more frequently now and is extremely irritating, frustrating and not ok. TOYOTA, DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS!!! Very disappointed

I have a 2015 Highlander and the freezing, crashing and rebooting problem has continued to increase with age to a point where I can’t rely on it anymore. I have the same symptoms as other stated. Toyota must know about this problem and should offer a software fix but I have not heard of any. Very disappointed X-customer

The system in my suv crashes and freezes a few times a day. The first time I was traveling and using the gps. I had to pull over so I could wait for it to come back in for the gps. It’s very irritating To me now, that I’m seriously thinking of replacing the system or selling it.

Okk..I agree with all of you and have the same issues with my husbands 2015 Tundra. BUT…when I attach MY phone to his truck it doesn’t happen?? Super weird and frustrating! We went and bought him a new phone just like mine…still happens! Anybody know of an app that might interfere and we need to delete it??

I realize these posts date back a few years but was search for answers. I’m waiting for mine, 7-14 days till a head unit is installed after less than one week of purchase of a 2019 Highlander, this month, November 2019. I can’t tell if it was the download of the Entune app that did this but I want to say yes. I owned a 2017 Highlander and hadn’t done anything techie with it (Entune), and all had been just fine. I really hope the new head unit fixes this problem and that it isn’t a “root” problem that is causing this issue!!! I’m so disappointed!

Joining the long list of frustrated Highlander owners. My system reboots every few minutes. It’s so frustrating however, it only seems to be my phone. I’ve added my kids’ phones and they don’t cause a reboot when using bluetooth. Perhaps I’ll delete the Entune and see what happens.

So glad I found this site. I’m not the only one and I’m not going crazy.
Bought new 2019 RAV4 with the upgraded Entune system, Sep ’19. Problems with the fancy Entune system from day one. It won’t download my contacts or access messages and the system randomly goes blank (reboots?), comes back 15 sec later. Dealer said it was my phone. I bought a new phone. No difference. They finally agreed to replace the head unit. I wait 3 weeks, Toyota sends the wrong unit. I have go is so they can pull it out and get serial numbers off the back of my unit. Wait 3 more weeks. Install new unit. SAME DAM PROBLEM!! Never even go out of the parking lot. Now they’re saying someone has to come from Toyota Tech. Who knows when? Don’t know what else I can do. Help!!!
