Highway Mileage With the New Highlander

As previously reported, our new Toyota Highlander averaged 18.5 mpg in mixed city & highway driving on its first full tank of gas. Yesterday, I had a chance to test it out on the interstate, and it did pretty well.

It was early on a Saturday morning, so the roads were clear and I was able to cruise at a consistent 70-75 mph. Yes, we’ve moved beyond the engine break-in period, so I’m free to just dial it in and go.

Anyway, I reset the mileage meter just before pulling onto the interstate and saw an average of 24.5 mpg vs. an EPA rating of 25 mpg on the highway. It was a smooth ride, and I was quite pleased with the mileage overall.

I purchased a 2014 Highlander Limited (FWD) about a month ago. It has about 800 miles (90% highway+10% local) now, but the mileage is still quite low (17.3 mpg). I took it to the dealer for a check-up but they did not found anything wrong with the vehicle. The repair consultant at the dealer told me the following: (1) the initial mpg is always lower than the EPA value but it will increase as you drive more miles (at least 3000 miles). (2) Using the gas without ethanol additive will increase mpg (Toyota tested their vehicles using such a gas).

Michael, can you comments on these two points and give us another update on the Highlander mpg?

I have the same problem with mpg in my 2015 Highlander XLE (AWD) purchased couple weeks ago (Sep 30) and currently it has about 1000 miles (70% highway+30% city) now, but the mileage shows very low (17.7-17.8 mpg). As per advertise on the Toyota website 18 city – 24 hwy, but its not capturing even city mpg.

    2015 Limited Platinum. Love it.
Ditto, at 75mph I got 24.5 mpg. Am getting around 19 in city.

I have a new 2016 LE+ AWD and I’m only getting 18.5 mpg and I’ve 99% highway miles. I’m still in the break-in period but it does have me a bit worried.
