Real-World Gas Mileage With a New Toyota Highlander

It’s official. Our Highlander averaged 18.5 mpg on its first tank of gas. This involved ca. 300 miles of mixed city/highway driving, including a fair bit of stop-and-go traffic, some country roads, and a smidgen on the freeway.

I’ll be updating periodically, but one interesting experiment is that I have coming up this weekend is a roughly 2 hour (each way) interstate trip that should give me a sense for mileage at the top end.

Update: The results are in. Check out our highway mileage.

Of course, this was still within the engine break-in period, so things may change. If anything, I’m hoping that the mpg will improve a bit over time.

Oh, and for context, we have a FWD XLE with an EPA rating of 19 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway, and 21 mpg in combined driving.

Poor MPG when Towing 3,500lb trailer @ 55 MPH. Normally get 23 MPG WHEN NOT TOWING. 11.5 MPG WHEN TOWING @ 55 MPH SOME HILLS . Is this normal ?

Probably should adjust the air pressure for the additional load, will help mpg as well
