Best Car Phone Mounts, Revisited

Awhile back, I wrote about the wonders of the Kenu Airframe (along with the Kenu Airframe+). These are vent-mounted cell phone holders that do a great job of keeping your phone in reach/view while on the road.

Well, as they say, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, and I’ve since a handful of alternative brands offering very similar solutions. Here are three that can handle smartphones with screen sizes up to 6″, like the Airframe+, while being considerably cheaper:

For reference, the Airframe and Airframe+ typically sell for $10-$15 more than these off brand solutions. But, like the Kenu vent mounts, these all have very high rating on Amazon. Given this, price should probably factor heavily into your decision.

And, just in case you’re looking for the proverbial better mousetrap, here are two more options that add a twist (literally) to the same basic design by incorporating a 360° rotating swivel into the vent clip:

Once again, these are both highly rated on Amazon. I can’t personally vouch for them, but they do appear to add some nice flexibility to Kenu’s basic design.

I’m a big fan of The Wirecutter and they recently had an article on this exact topic. I picked up the vent and CD-slot versions of the magnetic mounts they recommended and have to say – way better than any mounts I’ve previously used! Definitely worth a look, though the magnetic mounts require a case for your phone unless you feel like permanently affixing a thin piece of steel to the back of your phone (I didn’t).

Personally I hate the vent mounted cell phone holders, so after a long search I found the Magic Mount from Scosche. It attaches to the dash to the left of the climate controls. I also did a video showing where I installed it (and modified it a bit). Take a look at this video if you like:
